Drumming the rain

in #life8 years ago

It is very hot and humid, our place is a sauna. The little one is having trouble sleeping tonight, partly it is due to the weather but mostly because she is so excited before going to bed. She really loves having her uncle and aunty here and whenever they are out of sight asks where they are.

Since she was a tiny baby, she has fallen asleep to the sound of ocean waves that we play and now she looks forward to hearing them. They seem to calm her down.

I am sitting in here now as she is restless and trying to sleep and, they are making me sleepy too. I used to live next to a beach and at night I would open the door and listen to the waves crash on to the sand. I would listen for the patterns and try to pick out the larger waves. Every seventh.

On calm evenings, I would sit at a picnic table with a chemistry book with the intention to study but would end up just listening again. I am not a beach person but the sound of waves is hypnotic and reminded me of different times.

When I was young, I lived inland and there were no sounds but the occasional cricket chirping. However, when it rained heavily the drops hammered out its beats on the massive tin roof and the drone would seep into the mind and muscles to relax them both.

Now in an apartment building when it rains it is silent and there are no waves except those that emanate quietly from my daughter's room at night. Recently, she has been making sure that they go on before she gets into bed.

I wonder if later on in life, she will hear the ocean and feel connected like I do when I hear the roar of the rain on a tin roof.

Do you have sounds that remind you of periods in your life?

Not periods but places. Sounds of trains about one kilometer away remind me of my maternal grandparents' home.

That reminds me of another sound too. When I was young and on very still nights, the goods trains carrying coal could be heard faintly in the distance when they whistled at the crossings.

This reminded me of how we use to play naked in the rain, it's been many years but you know simple things sparks up memories

You can still run outside naked in the rain if you want :)

wouldn't that show a little lapses in my mental health? 😂😂😂

I have to say yes, the flowing chattering sounds of a stream always reminds me of staying in the mountains at my grandparents house as a child where as I fell asleep at night the stream water could be heard through the darkness and Iwas completely drawn to it. It brings not only memories but I start to smell the forest smells that also came through the window on those evenings. Lately here in the jungle the rain is so intense the thundering of it on the roof actually prevents me from falling asleep! 😆

Yeah, now with this, I got to remember one sound that makes me remember that saddened time my mom and I we're both indoor that day, and all of a sudden this sound came from the lightening of a thunder as if it was sent from above lol. That same day till this very time, I used to block my hears when it's raining don't really want to hear those rocketing sounds again.

😁😁😁 for the little girl...

Definitely,because she like them.

Yeah! I remember those amazing snoring from my grandpa during my childhood 😂😂

Really it's very hot in here, i also have remembered those beautiful days like you, when I was kid 6 to 7 years we had that type of house and when was havy raining was amazing filling , sound makes us sleepy and enjoyed lots, now missing those days, wish could get those days again! thanks to share to remembering me those days.

Different songs from bands in the '90s remind me of the various experiences that I had around the time those songs were popular / I listened to them.

Also, there's nothing more calming than listening to the ocean waves crash calmly on to a beach, or violently on a rocky shore.. each separate sound brings elicits different memories for me 🙂

Hi taraz. I am glad she is enjoying the extra family members. Nothing beats a tin roof in a rainstorm. It makes me want to go to bed. It is just so relaxing.

I think water sounds are always comforting because we are 60 percent water, and water is life.

All the relaxer recordings are waves, rain or whales. Don't ask me what the last one if about.

A connection to nature, maybe.

I spent significant portions of my childhood in a hot country, so the whirring of an air-conditioner is comforting. In England, though, we don't need them. . . except for this week lol!

With all that Steem, perhaps the whales sleep easily :P

What a beautiful post you brought us today, @tarazkp. I live near the sea and the smell and sound of its waves are part of my life. The rain when it falls here can sometimes be strange because it almost never rains, but its smell of wet earth permeates everything. Sometimes I remember my father with his guitar and his nostalgic singing. I loved to hear him sing and applaud him at the end of each piece. I'll never forget those moments with him. My father died two years ago. A hug for you.
