The End of a Love Story

The color white ended the love story of Tristan and Isolde. Celtic legend tells of Tristan who was sent to bring Isolde from Ireland as a bride for his uncle, the King of Cornwall. Tristan and Isolde accidentally drank a potion made by Isolde's mother, and that set into motion all of their troubles... Tristan married another woman, but when he was wounded in battle he asked to see Isolde so she would be able cure him. The returning ship's sails would be white if she agreed to come and black is she did not agree. Upon seeing the white sails Tristan's jealous wife told him that the sails were black. Tristan died in despair and when Isolde found him dead, she died of a broken heart.

The color of wholesomeness and purity

This color is a combination of all colors in the visible spectrum of light. It has always been viewed as wholesome and pure. In ancient times sacrificial animals were almost always white. In Judaism white represents purity and sacredness.

In Christianity the White Rose, also referred to as Madonna's Rose is a symbol of purity and of the Virgin Mary. Also, this color is identified in Christianity with priesthood and the first wholly bread.

In the Zulu tribe in Africa, the white beads symbolize something positive: spiritual love, pure virtues and chastity.

In India the color white is the color of holiness that the priests and the Brahmans use during religious ceremonies. They believe that the white lotus flower fell from the God Brahma and created the sacred lake Pushkar.
