Cascada Cailor - Borsa, Rodnei Mountains, Maramures

Cailor Waterfall is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Romania, situated on the northern slope of the Rodna Mountains, near the tourist resort of Borsa. The water from the melting of snow and the rain gathers in a glacier circle and from there it sits on the steep slope of the Piatra Rea Reservation thus forming this waterfall of overwhelming beauty. It is at an altitude of 1300 m and the fall of the water is 90 meters. The waterfall consists of several free fall steps, approximately 40m apart, the first two, the next to decrease their distance, succeeding only 20m.

The legend of the Horses
> Horseshoe Falls This superb place in the Rodna Mountains has its own legend. It is said that Mount Piatra Rea has always been the favorite place for those who live in the area to keep their horses from spring to autumn, the reason being as simple as it may be: the pastures are a beauty and richness to meet , so the horses could paste at will without being disturbed. But, as no story is beautiful, it is said that horse horses used to be attacked by the bear, being starved and looking for horse food. As the place was open, the bear's chances of winning were mostly small to zero. But, the bear, the smart animal, as it is known, found solutions to remedy the situation and to hunt the poor animals above the abyss near what is now called the Horse Horses. Thus, caught in a tight place, the poor animals had no chance any more, and the spoils of the star-dead bear. The alternative was for the animals to throw in the hut, which would not have meant a happy ending for them either. Legend says that this way the bear was chosen with about 15 horses.

Since then, locals have renamed this waterfall as the horses, precisely because of this legend. With this waterfall, the whole area has been renamed, the mountain in the immediate vicinity being called The Horse of the Horses, the Glacier Circus, which I mentioned earlier, also being called the Horseshoe Bridge. However, that the entire landscape is baptized in the same style and received the corresponding name, we mention that the stream that is right in the valley has been called the Spring of Horses.

Access to Waterfall
The access is very easy either by choosing the way from Borsa, walking (about 1, 1, 30 hours) on a path through the valley formed to the right of the resort, or by choosing the most comfortable way, using the chairlift, from the Borsa resort. From the top of the chairlift you can reach the Cailor Falls in about 15 minutes. The chair only starts if there is a minimum of 10-15 people. The last race of the chairlift is at 17.00.

LOCATION The Borsa town is located in a depression lane bordered by the Maramures Mountains and the Rodna Mountains, in Maramures County, 80 kilometers from Sighetu Marmatiei and 145 kilometers from Baia Mare.

Tourists coming by train have to take from the last station, Viseu de Sus, the minibuses that run regularly to Borsa. The car can be reached on DN18, on the Baia Mare - Sighetu Marmatiei - Borsa - Iacobeni route, on DN19 Oradea - Satu Mare - Negresti-Oas - Sighetu Marmatiei - Borsa or DN 17, from Bistrita.

ACCOMMODATION in Borsa are over 100 guesthouses and hotels. One night accommodation costs between 40 and 100 lei.

There are eight tourist routes certified in Borsa. You can visit, accompanied by authorized guides, Rodna and Maramures Mountains, Pietrosul Mare Reserves, Piatra Rea, Viteja Monument - erected in memory of the 1717 confrontation with the Golden Horde Tatars and the Miners' Monument in Baia Borsa. Borsa is also well-known for ski slopes, at odds of over 1,800 and even 2,000 meters, with lengths of two to three kilometers.
