Bega River - Details and History

The Bega River (Serbian: Begej, Hungarian Béga) is a river in Romania and Serbia. It springs into the Poiana Rusca Mountains. It crosses the towns of Făget and Timişoara, on the territory of Romania and the Serbian town of Zrenjanin. The Titel village flows into the river Tisalanga.

The Bega River is formed by joining two Bega Luncanilor Bega and Bega Poieni into the Court. The river continues through Margina, Făget, Răchita, Mănăştiur, Leucuşeşti, Bethausen, Cutina, Bodo Balinţ.

Upstream of the Chizătău locality, the Cantileşti-Chizătău Canal Deviate Channel flows out of the Timiş River into the Bega River. The river then passes through the localities Chizătău and Topolovăţu Mic. Immediately downstream of Topolovăţu Mic, the large beaches of the Bega River are diverted to the Timiş River by the Topolovăţ-Hitaş branch.

Downstream of Topolovăţu Mic, the course of the Bega River is completely channeled (see Bega Channel). The former bega of the Bega River is clogged upstream. Approximately downstream of Timisoara, the bed was kept under the name of Bega Veche (sometimes used as the Bega Age) and was largely redefined to drain the area north of the Bega Canal. On a 1.9 km stretch the river marks the Romanian-Serbian border.

History:

The construction of the Bega Channel, under the tutelage of Count Claudius Florimund Mercy (1666-1734), was a significant achievement of that era. Before the sewer, the Bega River fed the marshy areas of the west. The drying up of these marshlands was made for strategic, economic, and not least health reasons.
