Life Changes Abound: The Next 2 Months Will Suck

in #life5 years ago

@isaria and I have been living in Austin, TX for just about 4 years now. In those 4 years, I've grown to hate it. The traffic is awful, the cost-of-living has skyrocketed, and you can't drive more than 2 minutes without some automatic toll taking money from you.

We've been talking about moving for quite a while, and as of this July, it's going to happen.

The choices are as follows:

El Paso, Tx... It's about as far west as you can go in Texas, the cost-of-living is low, but I would have to find a new job. New job and finding a place to live that's an 8 hour drive away is pretty daunting.

Longview, TX.. It's between Shreveport, LA, and Dallas, TX but really in the middle of nowhere. It has everything one would need and the pay in that section of TX can be FANTASTIC... But, no one dreams of growing up to live in Longview. I can transfer there with my current company, so that would take the job hunt out of the equation.

What would you do?

Fellow Texan here. I would choose Longview. It really isn't that far from Dallas if you need to get to the big city, and as long as you plug in to the community there, I am sure that you will get along great. Plus, it's not like you have to live the rest of your life there, is it?

I'm thinking you may be correct. All we really need is a local grocery and internet. Plus, it's a lot closer to my parents.

Removing the job hunt from the equation is a huge PLUS. That takes off a ton of stress from the move because you are already familiar with the company and have a source of income when you get there. It seems like an easy choice to me

That's a good point. And it looks like it's weighing heavily that way.

I’m from Canada, so the only thing I think of is the heat. I’d move someone cooler...

But if I had to stay in the state... look for somewhere that’ll make you comfortable; No point in being unhappy

Oh. I would love cooler temps. But a certain someone would not. looks at @isaria

Roswell, New Mexico? :-)
I'd probably be thinking more of Longview. El Paso isn't that great of a choice, in my opinion.

Explore more job opportunities in El Paso and if no go than apply for a transfer to Longview until you can find work in El Paso.

Can you search online for some job opportunities? If happy with your current company, the security of the Longview option seems like it woul dbe better.

Tough questions. Can't you bend knees remotely by web interface?

If you're on short time and hate it seems like the sure thing that's higher pay is nice.

I think one of the keys to life is disposable income. When it's present so much shit is nicer and stress is much further down. I'd rather live well in a less desirable spot than live poorly in an expensive city.

The tag 'blame' makes me reluctant to add an opinion here...
In the end it comes down to your gut feeling. But the suggestions most offered already in the comments seem legit...
