Do Children See Colour?

in #life8 years ago

I come from a Rainbow Nation; South Africa. We are a diverse nation in colour, culture and religion. I am proud of this diversity and celebrate it, I respect it. Sadly, not everyone feels this way and while my country is beautiful with beautiful people - race and discrimination are still a huge problem.

Looking at my two year old I wonder, how can I raise him to appreciate differences? At this age he is so innocent. Do children see colour? Do they see it but just accept it? We are currently looking into adopting a black child. My husband and I are both on board, we just want to grow our family and have another child to love and care for. But we have our concerns, more for our children than for ourselves. How do we raise them to love who they are in a world that discriminates, that all to often plays the race card?

I do know one thing. I WANT my child to see colour, I want him to embrace it an appreciate it. I want him to learn from another's differences and grow up knowing that nothing is BLACK AND WHITE!

I hope for this every day! My two and a half year old son Oliver is growing up so kind and gentle, I think with a good parent/s with good values will show that nature and it will rub off :)

You are so right, we set the example for our children. Which is why I worry about our future generations, so many parents are still setting the wrong foundations. Thank you for your comment, Oliver is one lucky little boy :)

Oh my gosh I know right! Since becoming a Dad, i'm a lot more alert of the examples others set as well as myself.. and unfortunately I have seen so many people set bad examples as parents :( but fortunately in other circumstances I have seen some great opposites!

Firstly thanks for nice and heart touching post. Firstly from scientist prospective after 3 month of age baby's eyesight is getting stronger and they can recognize colors White and Black.
Next it is only skin color but no can says his heart color white, her heart color white. So I belive heart has no color. Also every one blood color is red.
So teach your children that we are human and not a doll. Dolls has color but human has no color. Post touches my heart belive others too also.

Physically, I remembered seeing almost every colours - I never knew why but red and green was problematic. After many years, it evolved but not as it should be :)
Emotionally, it was black/white - no gray or middle - By black/white, I mean good or bad, but no shades :) Thankfully, I evolved on that topic :)
