Learning New Languages ๐Ÿ“๐ŸŒ

Hello Steemit Friends,

Bonjour? Hola? Hello? There is a certain feeling of pride, class, and achievement that comes with speaking and understanding a foreign language, don't you think? However, in as much as the fruits of knowing another language are sweet, the process of learning can be rather sour without the right techniques. In that, it could be time-consuming hence frustrating causing you to give up altogether.

This articleโ€™s aim is to ensure that that does not happen by enlightening you on a few approaches to creatively learning any language. Shall we begin?

Get a pen pal

Rather than having to move to an exotically new destination to learn a whole new language with a disadvantage of excessive expenses and cultural shock. Get a pen pal. Who is a pen pal? Not literally mean a mail box style one. In the recent past, a pen pal was someone usually in another country that you frequently wrote letters to. Nowadays, the process has been modernized to social sites that have a platform for language exchange. Finding a pen pal that natively speaks the language you are learning will make studying interesting and easier. It would be preferable to pick an age-mate as you are bound to have similar interests hence more relatable.

Watch movies

You heard me right, make some popcorns, get comfortable and press play. Only this time you will not be watching your favorite Netflix shows but movies or TV shows in the language you are learning. A big part of learning a language has to do with listening, so listen! You could even take it a notch higher by subscribing to a cable channel or YouTube channel in that same language. Over time you will begin to notice you understand so much more other than 'fin' means the end. Believe me, so many of my girlfriends actually learnt korean amazingly through the series they are head over heels addicted to!. (Noted: Korean dramas are widely popular in the south east Asian region)

Listen to music

I believe you saw this coming, didnโ€™t you? I will not advise you to stop listening to your favorite genre of music, I will, however, ask you to find songs in the same genre but in different languages. Do you love blues and want to learn Chinese? Find a Chinese bluesโ€™ album. As mentioned earlier, the key to learning is in listening.

Play games

How about you change the language settings on your Xbox or on whichever game you love to play to German or Spanish? You might make a few errors at first maybe even lose a few games but in the process, you are learning that ๏ฟฝrechtโ€™ means right and not left. Additionally, explore your phoneโ€™s play store or that of your computerโ€™s for word games in the language you are learning.

Talk to yourself

Yes it sounds weird but it's 2018 and nobody judges, if they do then they aren't in trend. Standing in front of a mirror and compliment yourself in Italian, look out the window and make a comment about the day in French. Whatever the language, constantly speak it not just hear it. Alternatively, you could translate your favorite songs to the language you are studying then sing them in the shower. At the end of the day, you are helping your mind retain the information you learn.

These tips coupled with language lessons will have you become bilingual within no time. In case you need some motivation, keep in mind the benefits of bilingualism such as increases the pool of job opportunities for you, enhances your memory and multitasking skills, reduces any chances of dementia et cetera. Bonne chance, Buena Suerte, Good luck.

In my broken Korean that roughly translates to; Hello Sue, I studied Korean at university but I gave up, Languages are very important. I am going to study French again in the future. haha. Very rusty.

But I totally agree, the more languages you can learn, the better. What languages can you speak?

wow !! You even write ! Thats is awesome.. i lived in korea for a few months and the only words i remember is how to tell a dog to sit stand or sleep. hahaha

Haha, when did you visit korea?

Great post . Good pieces of advise for those who wants to get in the amazing adventure of learning a foreign language. These are some of the things I did :
_ Translating songs
_ Engaging in conversations with tourists visiting my town ( There was no internet at that time )
_Creating my own phonological system to learn new sounds
_Repeating, repeating, and repeating. That's is a lot of drilling and memorization .
_Talking to my classmate in the foreign language
_ Listening to my lessons several times a day ( I used to wear my Walkman everywhere I went )
This and more. I did it because I loved it.

Great ways !! Thank you for taking your time to explain new ways to this :)

this is amazing as i was waiting for your post and finally i got some great things to see thanks for posting ...already followed and upvoted

Thank you for your lovely comment !

When I first started learning Korean 6 years ago, I would look up the lyrics to my favorite songs online then write them down in a notebook. After, I would read along with the lyrics while listening. For me it was extremely helpful because I recognize my own handwriting so I could remember phrases and words easier. As far as grammar goes, I really wouldn't this method though. I'm just speaking for Korean.. I would memorized phrases in the songs and try to use them in real life but they often wouldn't work because a lot of songs don't use "real, standard" language rules or don't exactly have the proper hierarchical vocabulary that Korean culture has to apply (ie: speaking formally/informally depending on age and societal status)...haha... it was a long lesson learned.

Thats very interesting !! i would use that method in school. i wrote everything down. it took a lot of time but i remembered the visual of my hand writings better than typos also. So i see where you are coming from and how that actually works. !! great way ! cheers

Paid for Skype tuition to learn Thai with some housewife.

It was so boring lol. All I learnt was basics.

lol !! Just move here la !

Haha maybe one day naaaaaaaaaaa

Very good advice, I am learning Korean and I can read Hangul. Thanks to a native friend of Korea that has helped me little by little. A very good app to meet people from other countries and learn languages, is called "Hello Talk" that's where I met my friend and I have also been taught.

How did you make the image of the end? I like very much.

Very good post, greetings.

Thank you for sharing !! I will take a look at that !!

heheh so true! I have some friends who legit learned how to read in chinese by watching all their soap operas and anime when they were little

Great tips. And also try downloading a dictionary for your specified language.

Time will be very interesting with this stuff , great tips.

Totally true! I live in Croatia for three years now, and the easiest ways to learn the language are through listening music and watch movies..
No need for a pen pal as my boyfriend is Croatian :)
