VIVAT POETOVIO MCML - 1950 Years of Ptuj / Poetovio

This year is 1950 years from first written documentation of our oldest city in Slovenia.

They where allready people living here in stone age (Eneolitic) on Ptuj area (NW part of Slovenia, land called Štajerska). Later was here an Roman military base that became in 1st century city called Poetoviona. It was the most importaint city for trades between Adriatic and Baltic sea it was called the Jantar road. The bridge across Drava river was the reason why that city attracted a military - trading population.

It was year 69 when roman historian Tacit wrote in his book called Historiae first words about Poetoviona (Ptuj):

»Poetovionem in hibernia tertiae decimae legionis convenerant. Illic agitavere placerente obstrui Pannoniae Alpes, donec a tergo vires universae consurgerent, an ire comminus et certare pro Italia constantius foret (Tacit 3.1).«

»They gathered in Poetoviona in winter garnisia 13th legion. There they analized if it's better to baricade the Panonian Alpes untill they organise all of resources in the background, or if it's more reasonable to go on a knife and fight for Italy (Šašel, J.19079,1 in Slovenian, Slo-Eng me).«

The event of ilirian legions in Petoviona was very importaint! Marcus Antonius Primus the commander of VII (7th) Legion conviced the other commanders of legions to attack with the Vespazian. M. A. Primuis took over command of all actions on Vespazian way to throne. The event is known as Military coup.
