While in Alabama I saw these green boxes
After being out in the rain for the majority of the day. @ryulincoln and I find a laundry mat near by to dry off our clothes. While there we saw a green concrete like box out near the road.
I had no idea what it was until I got closer and saw it said storm shelter. It was about ten feet wide and ten feet long. Just big enough for people to take cover in the case of a tornado touching down. Or if deadly hail starts raining down, golfball to baseball sized ice balls are very dangerous. They form way up in the clouds due to mix of hot and cold air.
With the tornado logos on the box it's pretty clear what it's used for. But I have never seen these before. Loving in North Georgia we are in a lesser version of Tornado Alley called "Dixie Alley". I think where we were in Alabama was closer to the intense parts of Tornado Alley. And towns near by have seen F4 tornados within the last ten years. Another town in Alabama had an F5 touch down about ten years back.
The shelter was placed near a restaurant and other public buildings. So people could run for them if near by I would think.
@makinstuff had a tornado shelter as well. It was a brick structure buried underground. Never seen anything like it. Guess I haven't spent much time near the hot spots.
