Inspirational speech! Mark Zuckerberg's graduation speech for Harvard's Class of 2017

I have never met Mark Zuckerberg. Maybe he's a great guy, maybe he's not. Either way, I have to say I admire the fact that while he is rich enough to do whatever he wants, he chooses to devote a portion of his time and energy to give back to the rest of society. In addition to time and effort, he and his wife Priscilla have also generously vowed to donate 99% of their Facebook shares to charity. That's a lot of money!

Below is a link to the commencement speech Mark Zuckerberg gave to the Class of 2017 at Harvard University - its theme, helping each other find our purpose and building community. I think these are themes that many Steemers can identify with, especially the part about building community.

I particularly liked the quote he used at the end of his speech:

“May the source of strength, who blessed the ones before us, help us find the courage to make our lives a blessing.”

Wouldn't it be a wonderful world if each of us lived our lives so that we are a blessing to ourselves and to our communities? I guess that's something I aspire to do, and I deeply respect and admire the many people I've met who live their lives giving back to others, each in their own way.

The speech is a little long to read, but I hope you find the time to enjoy it.

Spoiler: The pickup line he used with Priscilla is pretty awful, but I guess it worked for him!

Thank you, great transcript and inspiring speech. It is important that people in position of power and wealth think how to solve big problem of not equality in today's world...

Many of the richest men on earth are giving back some of their wealth through charity.

That is very admirable, but to be honest I think it is kind of necessary. The gap between the rich and the poor is widening and at some point it will become intolerable by the masses and we have an uprising at our hands.

That situation could be ugly..

Men like Zuckerberg have such a huge amount of money that I think it is especially wise of him not to act greedy. That would really not please the masses.

Apart from that, the speech is indeed good.

Hi ronni, thanks for your comment. It seems to me that many people who built their wealth within their own lifetimes (Bill Gates, Warren Buffett, Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, Mark Zuckerberg) give a substantial amount of their wealth back to society, but I haven't heard as much about people in the financial industry who make millions in salary giving back. I think this is largely where the notion of the rich being greedy comes from. So it's great we have people like Warren Buffett and Mark Zuckerberg giving back and helping keep the peace!

I admire and respect Mark. The world gave him so much and now he wants to return the favor. There are many rich & greedy people out there, but he's not one of them. We should all try to take care of people in general in our daily life, especially the poor ones. Thanks for sharing this speech!

You're welcome. Agree that we should try to take care of people in general in our everyday lives.

I found this post through your comment on @digitalist post. I am just all over the place today lol. Glad I did, wanted to read the speech, thank you.

You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed reading the speech.

Wow, you weren't kidding. That was one of the worst pick up lines I've ever heard, lol. Anyways, thanks for sharing this speech, man! If he's really donating 99 percent of his shares as well, that really is pretty generous!

Yes, very generous indeed!

what a remarkable speech. Its more than excellent

Glad you enjoyed the post!

Yeah i did. I began to get some clues of how some people are making it in life. When great people talk, they leave many traces of their secrets to lead a successful life

I for one don't believed on Mark Zuckerberg so called "charity". I have always been a believer that these so called "charity foundation" are a way the rich can channel their money else where. Same thing goes to the Bill Gates / Rockefellas / Foundation ect.

Thanks for leaving a comment. I believe that while there are some people who use donations for purely self-interested purposes, there are also those who donate chiefly for charitable reasons.

For example, Andrew Carnegie paid for the construction of Carnegie Hall, John D. Rockefeller donated $80 million to found the University of Chicago, and Mark Zuckerberg donated $100 million to the Newark public school system. Even if they reap some benefits from their donations, the rest of society also benefits greatly.

It's kinda like the Clinton Foundation. Money were funnel to their own bank account instead of helping those who really need it. I'm not doubting Mark contribution, but I do have my doubts.

Understood! You have your doubts for good reason.

Truly inspirational!

What a generous man! Thanks for sharing!)
