I think part of the intrigue to me, is that 00's music was the same music I used to listen to on the radio as a kid.

The 00's are the only full decade which I've fully lived through - so hearing all this music I grew up with, being given a decade playlist just like the 60's, 70's, 80's and 90's is just bizarre to me. I'm sure people who've lived through other decades must've went through a similar revelation at one point or another, but I suppose the fact that this is the first decade of the 2000's just makes it feel different - to me at least.

The weird thing is that listening to this music, I can see the 90's influence transitioning into the 00's and then into what we now call 'modern music', the same way the 80's set the pretense for the 90's and so on. One day, today's 'modern' music will be listened to fondly by the generation after mine, stirring up all the same memories.

Nostalgia

The whole point in music is to make you feel something, and when a song is memorable enough to still have importance ten years (or more) down the line, it's bound to drag you back to whatever memories you can associate with it.

Whenever I feel down, I'd stick on a song with only good memories attached to it, it's the easiest way to reflect. In fact, being nostalgic has proven to be one of the most effective ways to deal with anxiety or depression, it reminds you that things were once good, so they're bound to improve again.

60's & 70's

Even though I didn't live through the 60's or 70's, both are decades that resonate with me, the carefree music, the social freedom and change that took place at those times are soaked up by the music of that time. Both my parents grew up in that time period, maybe I inherited their musical taste?

When I listen to that era's melodies, I quietly curse the universe that I missed out on a time before real stress, before international competition in education/work, before over the top health and safety rules, before technology, where neighbours would be best friends and you could travel the world in a VW camper van without a care in the world.
^{Of course, that's a glorification and a stereotype, I haven't a clue what it was like..}

00's

So many of my memories as a child or a teenager are brought up by 00's music. Some remind me of old friends who I've drifted away from but had great times with. Some remind me of holidays abroad and long car journeys. Some remind me that I'm the master of my own destiny. And some just remind me of a far simpler time.
