This Real-Life Iron Man Suit Can Make You Fly - And It Just Broke A World Speed Record!
Iron Man is iconic and one of the coolest superheroes around.
His suit is what gives him special abilities - it makes him fly and fight villains effortlessly.
Imagine if you could become Iron Man in real life - with a flying jet-pack suit!
UK Inventor and Entrepreneur Richard Browning has built a custom Iron Man suit - and even broke a World Speed Record with it.
Richard Browning and the Invention of "Daedalus"
Richard Browning is a British oil trader, Inventor, Triathlete and Ultra-Marathon runner.
He has been experimenting with the thought of human-powered flight for years, but noticed that there weren't a lot of well-funded projects in this area - so he decided to do it himself.
In 2016, he founded the company "Gravity" and developed its very first human aviation tool - the "Daedalus" jetpack suit.
The name "Daedalus" is of course related to the legend of Ancient Greek Inventor Daedalus who made wings for his son Ikarus to be able to fly. But Ikarus ends up flying too closely to the sun, the wax on his wings melts and he dies.
So the name "Daedalus" is dedicated to one of the first legends in history that made humans want to fly.
The "Daedalus" Suit
The suit is an exoskeleton with 4 micro jet turbines on the arms and 2 on either side of the hips.
It propulses the wearer into the air, with a maximum speed of 321 km/h (200 mph) at several hundreds of meters above the ground. It can keep flying for just over 10 minutes.
Each custom suit costs $250,000 to be developed.
But how do you learn to fly?
Browning describes the experience similar to riding a bike or driving a mini excavator. It needs some practice to get the movements right since you need to control right, left, up, down, forward and backwards without losing balance.
Gravity has invented, built and filed patents for a human propulsion technology that re-imagines manned flight. Our technology combines body mounted miniaturised jet-engines with a specially designed exo-skeleton allowing vertical take off and flight. The 'Daedalus' our mark 1 jet-engine suit is pioneering an entirely new category in aviation history.
Breaking the World Speed Record
Now, the revolutionary Daedalus suit has even broken a Guinness world record.
When Browning flew the suit above the Lagoona Park in Reading, England, he managed to get to a record speed of of 51.53 km/h (32.02 mph), setting a new world record for "fastest speed in a body-controlled jet engine power suit."
Future Outlook
Browning's company Gravity has received hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding to continue their development of Daedalus.
Although we can't expect to see the "Iron man suits" in stores just yet, the company is working hards towards making the civil aviation authority allow Daedalus for commercial use.
So we might not be able to fly around with Daedalus in the near future, but possibly in a few years time.
Until then, we are left with the Iron Man movies and dreaming of his suit!

Even before they showed him working out I knew that your body had to be trained to handle that power.
That is amazing.
Yes you definitely have to have a lot of core strength and body control in order to manage those jet engines!

Interesting reading and enlightening! Thanks @sirwinchester!👍
Glad you enjoyed it :)
Interesting
That is crazy cool and wild, but still there has to be a better way.
I thought we are breaking that hundred of km/h speed when I saw the speed breaking record title LOL
Yay... the day I've been waiting for. Uber Ironman. I guess no airbags
Hahaha, yes definitely no airbag, that's why even the inventor is flying rather carefully!
I have to also wonder about the weight of those things :-)
See this is what I'm talking about dude.. Where do you find this stuff. Do you send @agent out into the world for investigation, she emerges with a few potential stories and then you pick the freakin' coolest one to write about!?
Awesome find my friend, I usually enjoy what I discover when I see your name in the feed.
Thank you Jay I'm glad you enjoy my blog 😬
reading and researching is an essential part of my daily routine, so I'm keeping myself up to date with the latest news and decide to share the most interesting stories on steemit!
Right on, that's a great practice to form a habit around. Your efforts do not go unnoticed
Suit of Future...
Totally! Imagine using this jetpack suit to fly to work every morning..
hahaha, whaaaaat! The future is here. I wonder if we will fly around in suits or little mini helicopters :D
