Cliffside villagers cling to basic amenities

Before the road was built, many inhabitants spent their whole lives in the village.

Since 2012, the local government has been investing to improve water supply and cellphone signal coverage. The economy of Old Road Village has also been improving due to a growing number of visitors.

Old Road Village, located on a cliff in Sichuan Province, southwest China, is a settlement of some 500 residences. The only way for these villagers to reach and communicate with the outside world is a three-kilometer path snaking along the cliff built in 2003.

Before the road was built, many inhabitants spent their whole lives in the village.

Changwei, a villager born in the 1990s, said that he has to get up before sunrise to walk to school. It takes him 20 minutes to run to the bottom of the cliff on a regular errand to pick up pills for his grandmother.
