I'll take it further, success is also broken into two categories: external and internal. You speak well on internal success, which is a reflection of personal goals and achievements that make an individual feel fulfilled and happy. But there is also external success, what society (our family, friends, etc.) consider success and how well we achieve in others eyes. The business man may be successful to the world, but internally he may "hate" his life and live in misery. A homeless person may be externally looked at as a failure, but internally feel content.

Success is subjective, but I think people tend to feel the most successful when their subjective external and internal successes match. In the end, we seek acceptance from the outside world, and within ourselves.
