Project Report Part Three: The Garden
As mentioned in a previous post my husband has been struggling with shoulder pain, so this spring he has not been able to do the gardening he usually does. I really wanted to have a few squash and cucumber plants, so started nosing around to see who might be able to help out with the tilling. Then @generikat had a marvelous idea: she shared with me some heavy-duty greenhouse ground cloth to simply cover up the weeds in the area I wish to use! The pieces were just the right size, too.
I don't know if it will prove to be either helpful or effective, but I opted to cover the unneeded slits with heavy black tape. I am hoping it will discourage weeds from peeking through there, and also eliminate some tripping hazards.
My trip to the local wholesale greenhouse was lots of fun! Their prices are good to begin with, and in June they drop even further. I spent $40, and came away with 4 acorn squash plants, 4 cucumber plants, 2 zucchini plants, 2 large tomato plants, a jumbo pack of petunias, a pony pack of marigolds, and two big geraniums.
The tomatoes are above.
Haven't gotten these into pots yet!
The volunteer lettuce is doing very nicely, and my gladiolas are coming up.
A neighbor gave me some pepper starts. They look spindly at this time, but I hope they grow properly. I also planted some kohlrabi seeds. The dead raspberry canes are strategically placed to prevent cats from digging where I've planted seeds.
One last gardening note: my sister has identified the above mystery plant as phlox, now that it is big enough to recognize. She gave me a start last fall, and I planted it and then completely forgot about it. So it was a pleasant surprise this spring.
Gardening is so therapeutic! And rewarding
Yes! And I am happy to be gardening in moderation this year. We are getting older, and the garden got too big for us to manage.
