Metabo - A Strippers Dream Machine!

I have been posting about the renovation adventures I have been having in my house. There have been a lot of goings on around here and my latest alteration that I am in the process of doing is repainting the weatherboards on the house.

Paint Stripping

Now, after many years, 20 at a guess, the paint has been exposed to some fairly hot summer days and has started to crack and blister. Now I thought it should be a fairly straight-forward process, give it a sand, remove the raised parts and the cracked stuff and re-paint. But alas, my brother the professional painter came and had a look and informed me that it needed to be stripped right back to bare board as the old primer had cracked and was causing the top coat to flake.

So I started on the rear section of the house using a specialised scraper and a heat gun to take the paint off. It is a very time consuming process:

  1. Heat the paint
  2. Scrape the paint off
  3. Sand the boards back to bare
  4. Scrape the tricky edges as well
  5. Brush down the wall to remove any dust
  6. Paint the boards with an oil-based grey undercoat
  7. Finish with 2 coats of top coat

Adding to the difficulty is that I only have a ladder to work from and the house is actually 2 stories high.

Progress So far

I have half completed the back of the house and need to do the top section:

Now it comes up really good, however, the scraping of the paint part takes forever. That was until I acquired a nifty little machine from a mate that cuts the scraping component down to just a few hours.

It is a modified angle-grinder with an attachment that spins around and removes around 0.2mm of surface.

It is a dusty machine and requires the use of a face mask to keep the paint from continually smacking you in the face. It makes a real mess and only about 20% of the dust is actually captured by the attached vacuum suction. It also tends to grip into the weatherboards sometimes if you are not diligent and some sections will require a light sand.

The side wall of the house is progressing well though and instead of a week of scraping, most of the wall is now done after just a few days.

This was after just 1 hour of using the stripper.

So hopefully, I can have the whole wall stripped, prepped and painted over a couple of days.

Thanks for reading.

That's a Big Job! Glad you're Finding More Efficient Methods.. Makes Me Feel Silly for Complaining About Sanding/Painting My Kitchen Cabinets, lol!

That looks like some hard, dirty work there mate. I'll take face brick and mortar anyday. You've done a great job on your house! Good going.

Thanks it is hard and dirty work but needs to be done so I will soldier on!

That's dedication man, I would have just painted right over it or something, but that's why my wife forbids me from doing project like this, she doesn't like me quicker/half-ass approach.

Upvotes for effort there mate!

This sounds like a terrible way to spend your holidays!

I love painting but I hate the prep work! Only thing worse than stripping paint is trying to peel up vinyl flooring, it's ridiculous! Good luck, the progress so far looks great!
