LIBYA SLAVE TRADE SAGA (from the frying pan to fire 🔥)

in #life7 years ago

Slave trade involves the transportation by slave traders of enslaved African people mainly from Africa to the Americans and then sold there. The Portuguese were the first to start this trans-atlantic slave trade. Majority of the slaves are within central and western Africa. European slave traders sail with there cargo of manufactured and finished product to west coast of Africa. There, these products are been traded for captured people. Sometimes, the trade might take weeks, sometimes months. The western Europe slave traders found it more easy to do business with African intermediaries who normally raid different settlement far from the African coast and brought the healthy and young ones for sale.

Slave practices was mostly practiced in 16th to 18th century. It was abolished completely in Britain by the government in 1838.

But, just when we thought slave trade was a thing of the past, it started again in Libya.

Modern day slavery is widespread all over the world and Libya isn't an exception. But the shocking part about Libya's is that, it is practice openly, where people go and bid price for a human being and end up owning the person.

According to reports, the prey been used for slaves are ten's of thousands of African refugees who risk everything to Libya coast to get across the Mediterranean sea into Europe in search of a better life.

Is not a new thing that a lot of African refugees have been using Libya as a gateway to Europe by sea in search of a better life over there and over 150,000 refugees have been lucky enough to make it across the border for the past three years. Many of these refugees are from Africans that are fleeing away from war, hardship and unemployment in their country in search of a better life overseas. These refugees take a risky and tough journey through the desert, pay smugglers to get to Libya coast to cross to Europe.

Since the death of Gaddafi, there have been high breach in Security and the finance of the country had collapsed. As a result of this, human trafficking and smuggling has become a booming trade - Mahmoud abdelwahed.

The collapse of security has led to ten's of thousands of refugees arriving in Libya without any proper registration process. So, when these refugees are caught they are sent to there detention center which is unsupervised in some parts of Libya and are subject to torture, rape and forced labor. When these detention center gets to crowded, people are then sold of like goods in an open market.

According to the international organization for migration (I. O. M) Chief for Libya, Mr Othman Belbeisi, confirmed the slave auction taken place in Libya and this refugees were priced according to their skills and abilities.

"The prices differs base on your qualifications, for instance if you can do plumbing or carpentry or some specialised work then the price gets higher."

The African Union (AU) has expressed outrage after watching the footage of the slave auction in Libya and the AU chairman, President Alpha Conde of Guinea, has ordered for there prosecution over despicable act.

That is a real tragic story you bring to light here. The sad reality that most people don't see is that each of us are slaves to someone or some government. These people at least know their situation , and hopefully plan and execute an escape in the future, we on the other hand, refuse to admit it and just hope things get better.
Thanks for putting this out there for all to see.

Oh God this is just so so sad. I just don't what to say except for pray for them.

This is such a sad situation, @sbamsoneu! Thanks for publishing this difficult topic. It is a sickening tragedy that this still happens in many places of the world, including the United States where women and children are trapped and trafficked for profit in the sex trade. God have mercy on us!
I found this article in the @unmentionable daily digest, and have given you a follow, an 100% upvote and a resteem.

That is heartbreaking. Unfortunately slave trade is alive and well in many places of the world. Thank you for shining attention on this.

What an absolutely chilling story. It needs the whole world's attention. To think something like this is still going on in this day and age!! Thank you for telling it. It is probably the most serious piece I have ever chosen for our Curation Post. Hopefully it will inspire more work on equally neglected and urgent topics.
