Why You Need To Take A Break Even From Things You're Passionate About

When Monday comes, we can usually see people moaning and groaning about having to go to work and this always makes me feel that most people in the world don't really like their work.

That seems pretty obvious considering how most of the jobs are being done only to 'make a living' and only seldom do you find someone who actually loves what they do.

But even they will sometimes complain about having to do their job even though they are seemingly passionate about it. So what's happening here? Why do we need breaks even from things and work we love?

The Need For Downtime

There can be several reasons for this I think. One of the main ones, obviously, is that we are not machines. We are biological creatures with physical and mental limitations.

After prolonged periods of activities, our bodies and minds naturally crave for some downtime to recharge. That is why even if you love binge watching that favourite TV show of yours, after a point, you will just want to shut your eyes and fall asleep for a whole day!

The other reason that I have noticed is that we humans require constant motivation to keep on doing what we do. That goes for jobs you do just because you have to do them as well as the ones that you love doing.

When we are highly motivated, there is a natural surge of energy and excitement and we want to take on as much as we possibly can but when motivation is running low, you simply want to take a break until you stumble upon something that would motivate you again.

What To Do?

When you want to take a break, you often tend to feel guilty about it because you are made to think that you are not supposed to waste time and keep working, because you know, productivity is valued a little too much in the modern world.

But it's ok to take breaks and go do something else to recharge and gather your thoughts. See it as a need like any other of your needs. In fact, if you do not take a break, and continue to grind, you will burn yourself out and then you will be forced to take a break.

I had even written about this a long time ago where I talked about the importance of doing nothing. It might seem like a no brainer but trust me, a lot of people don't actually realise this.

Taking a break doesn't always mean you have to wander into the world of dreams though. There are several things you can do to rejuvenate yourself. One can travel, play video games, take a walk in the park, play a sport of some kind, hangout with friends like old times, watch movies and TV shows and a million other things. Do give yourself some time too!

Right taking break gives new refreshment.

Yes, exactly.

I totally agree with you. We still have that inherent animalistic and arbitrary part that seeks to float to surface and breath from time to time. Disengaging from routine, duties, and commitments every while is realxing, and refreshing. Life is about cycles and shutting down is part of every cycle.

That's exactly right :)

I agree with the part on doing nothing. For me it's the only way to re-create moments for me to feel the aliveness of life. Thank you for sharing this! @sauravrungta I also had a hard time getting up for work ;)

It can be really necessary sometimes to do "nothing" hehe

I like to take break from my busy schedule so that i can spend my break time with my Girlfriend,... and that 15 min with her actually takes my whole stress and tension away....

Yeah, it's great to spend time with your loved ones. They take away all your stress and provide a support system for us to thrive.

Most of the times even if we push ourselves to keep on working tirelessly because we believe in what we do and that it will have a positive impact in our life in long run, eventually our body starts to give up and our performance decreases leading to self-doubt and depression. Thats why it also becomes the responsibility of the manager/mentor to analyse whether they are not overworking their proteges and burning them out.

Burning out is a major problem in the modern world. There is just too much to do and deadlines to meet. In a way, everything has become a race and it takes a toll on the body and the mind.

Simple but thought-provoking post.
