The curve of growth - my experiences in learning a new language

in #life6 years ago

Like so many things in life, my process of learning spanish as something that is everything else than a linear path.

I experience it more like a journey of ups and downs. Some days are flowing better, some less. Sometimes it's harder to see my progress, sometimes easier.

But looking at the bigger picture, my growth is clearly visible. And I just had this interesting conversation with my teacher this morning, that with the intention, the willingness to learn and time, progress is almost inevitable.

Yet, expecting "permanent" static growth can be discouraging. And perhaps growth always includes unforeseen plateaus. Like a young kid that grows in periods.

By looking at the kid day by day, it may seem hard to spot its growth.

Yet when the aunt makes her yearly visit, she is each time astonished on "how fast the junior grew!"

Which brings me to this: What if growth and change happen anyways? Sometimes we just have to step back and look from the distance in order to see it.
