RE: If you encounter a dog, how do you avoid attacking you?

in #life7 years ago

Having grown up in an area with many dangerous dogs, I have to say this is poor advice. If you are confronted by an aggressive dog, first speak in a loud assertive tone and tell it lie down, or sit. 'Go home' is not something many people teach their dog. Sit is usually the first thing.
Do not forget us humans are basically very clever monkeys. You can climb things that dogs cannot. Go up on a car, fence, or other vertical object which a 4 legged animal can not scale.
If there is no other option, same as when attacked by a person, the best defense is offense. I do not endorse hurting animals. But if a large dog is trying to bite you, you are better off kicking it once in the ribs, than being bitten and possibly catching a nasty infection. If this is the course of action you must take. Simply commit to it and kick the animal one. Most dogs only ever need to be kicked once and they will depart. Don't try to punish or injure the dog further. If the animal thinks that they are in danger of being killed they will try to do same to you.
This of course risks being bitten in the leg, but that is likely where you would be bitten in the first place if you did nothing.
