Which Model Works?: Here to Stay? Good bye? Or See you next time?

Regardless of whether it’s a nonprofit, a conglomerate, or even military, whenever an organization, business, or a group of people decide to move into a new area, they can’t help but ask themselves the question, “how long are we here for?” No matter the vision, it’s difficult for strangers to root themselves in a new community. And the difficulty in doing so is just one of the many reasons why people tend to vote against a long-term commitment on the grounds of a new terrain.

In fact, the US-South Korea relationship is one where this is issue has brought about much discourse in the communities of both countries. After the Korean War, former president Seung-man Rhee struck a deal with the US government, securing the presence of the United States Forces Korea in the peninsula. Both parties have had something to gain from this deal, but now that we’re pushing 7 decades of this pact, no doubt, this has been a topic that generates much contention today, some defending others arguing for and against the need and efficacy of such a program.

This begs the question, what is the best way to approach the question of settling in a foreign country?

First, let’s take a look at Partners in Health, which focuses on generating a lasting model for aid. PIH has the mission of providing a long-term solution in health care to poor communities. In fact, one of their mottos is We go. We make house calls. We build health systems. We stay. That should give you a sense of PIH’s dedication to the creation of a long-term infrastructure and to see it through.

In contrast, World Vision, as seen from their Korean website, has the motto, “So long, World Vision!” This speaks to the idea that World Vision views the capacity-building of local communities to become self-sufficient as being of paramount importance--perhaps an indicator of “success”.

Finally, let’s take a look at Doctors Without Borders or (Medecins Sans Frontieres). They come in often for disaster relief, working on a project-by-project basis, staying, giving help, and leaving, often with the promise to return should the need arise again. This may be seen as somewhat of an intermediary version of those seend in the previous two examples.

Now, we would like to ask our readers of the STEEMIT community! What do YOU think is the best model? If you think “it depends” on the purpose, what do you think is the best way for Raise Uganda Now to operate and why? We look forward to hearing from y’all!
