Hey STEEMIT!

This past week, we’ve been talking about water and electricity as both resources and perils in Uganda. Today, we’d like to talk about yet another resource that we often take for granted. The Internet!

Facebook has a dedicated mission to provide free internet in many parts of Africa!

Much like any other country, Uganda’s internet usage saw a huge surge between the years 2000 and 2016. In fact, its usage and proliferation continued to rise even when the economic stance of the country, represented by GDP per capita below, was staggering. Today, nearly a third of the country has access to the internet.

In fact, Uganda ranks 15th out of the 55 countries that are listed under the UN’s survey on internet proliferation. Care to guess who’s ranking first place?

It’s Kenya! Along with the most prolific use of mobile money, Kenya’s National Broadband Strategy has been considered a success and has allowed it provide an average of 15Mbps in internet speed, putting it in 23rd place in the world in terms of internet speed, ahead of countries such as Israel, Qatar, and South Africa.

You might begin to wonder who’s got that top seat for fastest internet in the world??!!

It’s South Korea! With a whomping 26Mbps, it’s got the fastest internet speed in the world!

Velocity of economic growth and the proliferation and/or speed of internet as a modern form of infrastructure. Could there be a relationship here? What are your thoughts--should access to internet be considered a priority? If so, to what extent? Let us know in the comments!

Wow,this is amazing ,good statistic work,I never knew Kenya was number one in Africa .

Vodafone Uganda is phasing out its unlimited data plans, which were undoubtedly the best internet deals for individual users with heavy data needs and small and medium-sized enterprises. We assumed there would be a few broken hearts who might consider moving on to other providers with similar deals. So we put our unlimited data plan to use, and went combing through websites of the various telecom companies to see what else is there.
