Charles Spencer Chaplin KBE (London, April 16, 1889 - Corsier-sur-Vevey, December 25, 1977) was a British actor, director, producer, comedian, entrepreneur, writer, comedian, dancer, screenwriter and musician.
Chaplin was one of the actors of the silent film era, notable for the use of mime and comedy slapstick. He is well-known for his films The Immigrant, The Boy, In Search of Gold (this one considered by him his best film), The Circus, City Lights, Modern Times, The Great Dictator, Ribalta Lights, A King in New York and The Countess of Hong Kong.

Influenced by the work of his predecessors - French comedian Max Linder, Georges Melies, DW Griffith Luis and Auguste Lumiere - and sharing the work with Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford, he was influenced by mime, pantomime and the genre of slapstick and influenced a huge team of comedians And filmmakers such as Federico Fellini, The Three Stooges, Peter Sellers, Milton Berle, Marcel Marceau, Jacques Tati, Rowan Atkinson, Johnny Depp, Michael Jackson, Sacha Baron Cohen, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton and other directors and comedians. It is considered by some critics the greatest cinematographic artist of all time, and one of the "fathers of the cinema", together with the Brothers Lumiere, Georges Meliesand D.W. Griffith.

Charlie Chaplin acted, directed, wrote, produced and financed his own films, being heavily influenced by a predecessor, the French comedian Max Linder, to whom he dedicated one of his films. His entertainment career spanned more than 75 years, from his earliest performances when he was a child in the United Kingdom theaters during the Victorian era almost until his death at age 88. His public and private life embraced adulation and controversy. Together with Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks and D. W. Griffith, Chaplin founded the British comedian in 1919.

His main and most famous character was The Tramp, known as Charlot in Europe and also known as Carlitos or "O Vagabundo" in Brazil. It consists of a meager wanderer who possesses all the refined manners and dignity of a gentleman, wearing a black split fray, pants and shoes worn and wider than his number, a top hat or top hat, a bamboo cane And - his personal mark - a small mustache.

He was also a talented chess player and came face-to-face with American champion Samuel Reshevsky.

In a review of Chaplin's A Life, Martin Sieff writes: "Chaplin was not just 'big', he was gigantic. In 1915, he broke out into a war-torn world bringing the gift of comedy, laughter and relief while He himself was dividing in half by World War I. Over the next 55 years, through the Great Depression and the rise of Hitler, he remained on the job.He was bigger than anyone. It is doubtful that any other individual has given more Entertainment, pleasure and relief for so many human beings when they needed it most. "

For his unparalleled contribution to the development of the seventh art, Chaplin is the most honored filmmaker of all time, being still in life decorated by the British (Knight of the British Empire) and French (Légion d 'Honneur) governments, Oxford University Honoris Causa) and the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences of the United States (Special Oscar for the work as a whole, in 1972)

Charles Spencer Chaplin, who was left-handed,was born on April 16, 1889, supposedly on East Street, Walworth, London, England. His parents were music-hall artists. His father, Charles Spencer Chaplin Sr., was vocalista and actor, and his mother, Hannah Chaplin, was singer and actress. Both separated before Charlie turned three. After the separation, Chaplin was left in the care of his mother, who was becoming more and more emotionally unstable. The 1891 census shows that his mother lived with Charlie and his half-brother Sydney John Hawkes (1885-1965) on Barlow Street, Walworth.

As a boy, Chaplin lived alternately at various addresses, especially around Kennington Road in Lambeth, including 3 Pownall Terrace, Chester Street and 39 Methley Street. The mother of his paternal was born of the family Smith of Romanichals.

A larynx problem ended the singing career of Chaplin's mother. [8] Due to one of his hospitalizations as a consequence of his mental problems, he was suffering from nervous depression and malnutrition, his children were admitted for several weeks to the Lambeth asylum in South London and soon at Hanwell School for poor orphans and boys since June 1896 to January 1898.

Charles Chaplin's father was an alcoholic and had little contact with his son, although Chaplin and his half-brother lived for a short time with his father and his mistress, Louise, at 287 Kennington Road. Due to her mother, to be hospitalized due to her serious mental problems

Chaplin's first tour of the United States with Fred Karno's troupe occurred during 1910 until 1912. After five months back in England, he returns to the United States on a second tour with the Karno troupe, arriving again in America on 2 October 1912. In the Company of Karno was Arthur Stanley Jefferson, who would later become known as Stan Laurel. Chaplin and Laurel shared a room in a boarding house. Stan Laurel returned to England, but Chaplin remained in the United States. At the end of 1913, Chaplin's performance was eventually seen by Mack Sennett, Mabel Normand, Minta Durfee and Fatty Arbuckle. Sennett hired him to his studio, the Keystone Film Company, as they needed a replacement for Ford Sterling. Initially, Chaplin had great difficulty adapting to Keystone's style of filmmaking. After Chaplin's film debut in Making a Living, Sennett felt he had made a big mistake. Many claim that it was Normand who persuaded him to give Chaplin a second chance.

Chaplin began working along with Normand, who directed and wrote several of his first films. Chaplin did not like being run by a woman, and the two often argued. [16] He believed that Sennett intended to dismiss him if there was a disagreement with Normand. However, Chaplin's films were so successful that he became one of Keystone's biggest stars
