Street smarts is a skill set not everyone in the world has or can acquire easily. But how does someone become street smart? Do you have to be a drug dealer or a big time criminal to acquire street smarts? i say no. Street smarts is not only a trait found in people who live and survive in an urban atmosphere, but it is also a trait found in multi millionaires and other hugely successful people all around the world.

This is a very vague definition to me

street-smart (ˈstrētˌsmärt) the experience and knowledge necessary to deal with the potential difficulties or dangers of life in an urban environment.

My definition

Street smarts is an ability that is almost like super hero powers, it's like having Peter Parker's "spidey sense". It's not only a trait that you can process logically in your brain, but it is a gut instinct and feeling also. If you've ever felt your gut react to a situation that you knew something bad was about to happen, that is your street smarts kicking in. It's easy to think that everyone might have this sense, but everyone does not. Some people are clueless as to what is going on around them and are taken completely by surprise when something bad happens to them. Street smarts is not just about the potential difficulties or dangers in an urban environment, but also the dangers and risks ANYWHERE in life, including the office.

Gives you the Edge

When you are street smart you automatically have an edge over the competition in business, why? Because you have a different perspective on how to do business. You can read people better than someone who is book smart, so you might find yourself in a better position to leverage a better deal. Good poker players are probably street smart, because a good poker player can always call someone's bluff, they see things before they happen and risk it all on their gut instinct. The same goes for any one who is street savvy, taking risks is a huge part of business and naturally someone who is street smart is used to taking more risks.

A lot of people who have street smarts we're also people who grew up poor, and without a lot of means. A child growing up without much will naturally have certain survival skills kick in. But even still, not every child who grows up poor will have street smarts, after all there is a "natural selection" evolutionary process always happening.

Take a look at some millionaires who grew up poor

• Roman Abramovich - an orphan from age 4, now he's a billionaire
• Steve Jobs - adopted and could barely afford college
• Oprah Winfrey - sexually abused as a child, grew up poor
• Jay-Z - born and raised in the projects of Brooklyn
• Richard Branson - was told as a child he would either go to prison or be a millionaire

Hundreds and probably thousands of the worlds most famous and wealthiest people are most likely street smart.

Everyone loves this character from the hit show Breaking Bad. Walter White is one of the most prolific and bad-ass characters in television history. He was just a regular guy, some would even call a "square" at the beginning of the show, he was just a chemistry teacher. But we soon find out once he is diagnosed with cancer that he had something more inside of him than just that book smart chemist. Walter White showed the world that even a man from a suburban neighborhood could walk into an urban environment and not only survive, but become the boss! which leads me to my next question.

Can anyone become street smart?

In my opinion? No..a person cannot all of a sudden one day become street smart. You might find guides online on "How to be street smart" but these guides are merely an outlook on what an actual street smart person is naturally. Having street smarts is innate, it's something that naturally comes to a person and it cannot be taught. I know some people personally who are from the urban environment, born and raised and they do not have an ounce of street smarts in them. And i also know people who weren't raised in the street, but they definitely have that street edge and they can pull it out whenever they need to.

Street smarts go a very long way in the street, home, or office.. It's not just about being able to perceive a danger, but it's knowing how to read people and leveraging what you know in your favor. And when it comes to business this is a skill that is priceless, you will no doubt be successful if you carry and utilize street smarts in business.
