¿Does power change people or reveal how they really were?

There is a saying that I personally love: "If you want to know how someone is, look at the way you treat the waiter." It is a good phrase because it has a great truth inserted: it abuses who can, not who wants. Then you may want to do it or not, but you always have to have the power to do it first. In addition, it leaves us the reflection that if it does it in a case, it is feasible to think that in other different cases it could also do it. The data is there about what happens when that person gains power over another. You extrapolate it a little and you come to the conclusion: what if you were the waiter?

Psychologists generally define "power" as the ability to exercise control over others to get something from them. Or, being able to do something because there is nothing or no one to prevent or prevent it. However, current research explores whether the advantage of psychologically speaking power is not so much to make or influence something or someone, but to protect the possessor from the influence and acts of others; even of reality itself. It might seem like it's just saying the same thing inside out, but it's not like that.

Experiments show that the powerful generate more creative ideas because they are less influenced by the examples of others, but in turn are more influenced by their own value, and are more likely that, by lack of contagion, their opinions are contrary to those of the majority and, still, do not change them.

Quickly and easily we believe what comes out of our own mouth, even when the original reason for expressing it is no longer relevant. Self-manifestation is the most beautiful music that our own ears can hear, so, if we keep telling ourselves that we are good, just and sincere, we will believe it. Say what the facts say. This may be the main reason why people who objectively anyone would consider bad, do not lose sleep due to guilt.

But, let's go back to power. There is a phrase that Michelle Obama told the crowd at a National Convention: "Being president does not change who you are, reveals it."

The latest experiments could illustrate that Michelle is right and that power is not always psychologically liberating; it can create an internal conflict and, therefore, lead to a change in attitude, but it is not in the last instance as the popular saying "power changes people" suggests, but rather it seems to be an extension of the personality that it already existed produced by the effect that results from the absence of external "brakes" or "frictions". Power protects us from the outside; even those things from the outside that protected us against the bad qualities that we already possessed.
