My obsession with repurposing and recycling - Part 5
I've always loved creating things from other people's trash.
Not necessarily trash such as milk jugs and packing peanuts, although that has happened - But more like items that people are planning to take to the Goodwill or broken pieces that people are trying to offload in their yard sales for $1. Growing up, my dad and granddad were always into thrifting/bargain hunting/picking, so naturally, I became rather fond of it all and begin doing it on my own as a sort of hobby.
A few months ago @uglysweater and I were visiting our hometown of Nashville, while there, I went bargain hunting every weekend, one day I came across a killer deal. Remember the Sassafras rounds that I turned into a table in Part 1? Well, the same day that I found those, I had actually gone to this guy's house to pick up the beautiful y-shaped slab of Elm you will see in today's piece. I gave him $1o for it, because I knew it would make a beautiful coffee table - Then I brought it all the way back to Idaho with us because I ran out of time in Nashville. And those super retro legs? Yeah, I scored those from a local junk sale - 4 for $1.
As soon as I found those legs, I knew exactly how they had to be used!
They were perfect for this slab! They were originally a brass color with a bit of rust mixed in, but I just to sand them down and spray them a matte back...Yeah, yeah, I know. I have an obsession with matte black. - So? I trimmed up the ends of the slab to make them a bit cleaner and then sanded the entire slab to 220 grit. I applied some New American stain, added about 3 coats of Tung oil and a layer of wax to make it super smooth, attached the legs and took pictures for a listing.
You wanna hear the juicy stats?
Amount invested: ~$20
Amount sold for: $160
BOOM!
Think this sort of thing is difficult? Think again!

Great work reusing and recycling! Haha. It's difficult for me as I'm a total klutz and I don't know what I'm doing. Awesome job!
Thanks so much, @dali.soh!
Your stuff is so unique and artistic, I think you could charge more:) This stuff is fantastic!
I definitely could, but I would need a warehouse to keep it all! I enjoy the quicker turnarounds, though. haha :)
I thoroughly enjoy every piece you have made, I'm not sure I could ever say which one was my favorite. This one is brilliant for sure.
Keep these coming and
STEEM ON!
Thanks for all of your support, @noboxes!
Keep bringing it!!
Thanks, @gringalicious!

Haha Thanks, @lifes-a-donut!
This is really a piece of art. It's so good to hear of recycling and you do it with flair. Well done. I am married to an artist, printmaker, chef and woodworker. I keep promising to put some of his art on Steemit as it really is beautiful. Well done you!
WOW! That's a lot of spouses! ;)
I would love to see some of his work some time!
Thank you rigaronib I'll post something soon, so you can see what a craftsman he was. He now uses cooking to show his skills!
Very cool!
What a great find! I'd love to get wood like this for only $20
You did a great job recycling.

What a stunning coffee table, amazing job, congrats!
