Introduction

Suspicion is an act of believing that someone is responsible for an event. A feeling or thought that something is possible, likely, or true.. According to Merriam-Webster dictionary, suspicion is the act or an instance of suspecting something wrong without proof or on slight evidence. It can also be viewed as a state of mental uneasiness and uncertainty. 1

Reasons for Suspicion

Usually, people start suspecting habitually as a result of incidence which often happen earlier in life. Several trigger can activate a suspecting mind. Life challenges can trigger suspicion.

Suspicion as Medical Condition

Paranoid personality disorder (PPD) is a type of eccentric personality disorder. An eccentric personality disorder means that the person’s behavior may seem odd or unusual to others. 2

An individual with paranoid personality behavior is very suspicious of other people. They mistrust the motives of others and believe that others want to harm them. Additional hallmarks of this condition include being reluctant to confide in others, bearing grudges, and finding demeaning or threatening subtext in even the most innocent of comments or events. A person with PPD can be quick to feel anger and feel hostile toward others. 3

Benefits of Suspicion

Suspicion as a whole is not entirely bad as from suspicion, one can actually avoid real danger. Sometimes, someone may have an intuition about something or have a hunch about something and it eventually becomes true.

This means that it is not every suspicion that is bad. However, one should be able to manage his/her level of suspicion so that it does not cross the acceptable borderline or become habitual.

Impact of Suspicion

Suspicion can impact positively or negatively on an individual depending on whether it is a normal suspicion or a medical condition.

Habitual or medical suspicion can create relationship problem when you constantly suspect your friends or partner. It can also affect you in your work place if not well managed.

Controlling Suspicion

If after reading this article you consider yourself suspecting too much then you may need to see a doctor for a personal evaluation. Some level of diagnosis can be made by mere asking questions on how you would react under certain circumstances.

Treatment of Medical Suspicion

When you have agreed that you suspect too much, you can take steps towards curbing such. If you cannot handle it yourself, then a physician may have to evaluate you and prescribe some drugs like anxiolytics for you especially if there is a concomitant anxiety associated with your suspicion which most often is the case. For this, benzodiazepines are the best.

Conclusion

Do a personal test for yourself today and see if you are likely to be prone to :

1) believing that others have hidden motives or are out to harm you
2) doubting the loyalty of others;
3)  being hypersensitive to criticism;

5) being quick to become angry and hostile;
6) becoming detached or socially isolated;
7) being argumentative and defensive;
8)  having trouble seeing your problems;
9)  having trouble relaxing 1

If almost all of the above is the case, you may actually need to see a doctor immediately for further evaluation and help.
