Learning is the act of acquiring new knowledge, concepts, behaviors, attitudes, values, skills, and preferences. Humans possess the ability to learn naturally; animals, plants, and some machines also learn; however, there is strong evidence for a type of learning in some plants. Some forms of learning are more efficient than others. The efficiency of learning depends on both the information processing tools used, the quality of the instruction, the feedback received from the subject, the competence of the tutor, and the length of time spent on learning.


Instructional design is an instructional principle that involves the study of a subject, identifying the necessary concepts and processes, developing appropriate instructional practices, presenting the subject in a clear and logical manner, providing feedback to the student, testing the student's comprehension and application of the information learned, and offering alternatives to further explore the topic. This process creates knowledge and helps students apply it. This method of learning was developed by Leo Tolstoy in his book, The Chemical Testament. It was later applied by many other authors including Daniel Defoe in England, Arnold Bennett in America, and Enzo Trophon in Italy. The goal of an instructional design is to supply the student with knowledge that can be used to solve real-life problems.

An alternative to this learning method is the iterative process, also known as the pact learning cycle, which is based on the principle that new knowledge is acquired through applying previously acquired knowledge. In the iterative process, the student receives instruction and performs a predetermined set of actions that do not necessarily result in new knowledge. The steps in the pact learning cycle are not rigid, instead the learner is allowed to take his time and make mistakes. This allows the learner to develop new strategies, understand better ways of performing a certain task, or completely avoid doing something that he thinks is bad.

In this manner, learners are given opportunities to apply the previously learned material through different methods and with different levels of skill. Oftentimes, this leads to a situation where learners are working on two tasks at once: they are receiving instruction on the one hand, while they are also practicing a previously learned skill on the other. Such a situation requires the use of more than one type of learning techniques or modes of engagement.

Experiences, which occur outside the classroom, offer unique learning opportunities. For example, students can gain valuable knowledge from observing others and how they process information. Teachers can use their observations to provide students with additional opportunities for learning. Students who have never had the opportunity to engage in such activities may find this an exciting way to gain understanding of the subject matter. Taking part in group projects that allow them to apply their prior knowledge while developing new ones offers the perfect opportunity for students to develop the skills they need to succeed in their future careers.

Furthermore, learning takes place in social settings beyond the classroom. Students can take part in experiences that allow them to practice and explore new concepts outside the classroom as well. These experiences include activities like field trips and visiting museums. These trips allow students to get away from the rigid schedules of their classrooms and gain valuable new knowledge from the experience of actually visiting the sites. Students may even decide to pursue degrees or certifications from these sites.

Such learning experiences also allow for the development of social and interpersonal skills. During field trips, for example, some learners will meet new friends who may provide them with additional support during the research process. On the other hand, some individuals will be able to expand their own networks, which can lead to professional relationships in the future. Such learning activities may not be available to every student, however, which means that some students will have to find other ways of developing these essential life skills.

By taking part in educational experiences outside the classroom, learners gain the opportunity to gain knowledge from experiences that directly relate to their fields of study. Such experiences provide a unique opportunity for students to explore their interests and try out different ideas. This allows them to develop skills in problem solving and creative thinking. By doing so, they will be better prepared to face their academic challenges.
