Yes. Jack London lived for a time as a hobo, hopping trains across the country. He was a socialist and quite active politically. He even spent some time in the county jail where I live (Buffalo,NY), arrested for vagrancy.

I also was homeless living out of and traveling in my car when I was in my twenties. I can't say I really knew what it was like to have nothing and be impoverished because I knew I could always call someone for help if it got bad enough. There are people born into homeless families. They have it much worse than I ever did. I mean at least I had a car even if I preferred sleeping under a bridge.
