I was so disappointed when I arrived in the Philippines in 1990 at age of 25 expecting to hangout with tanned beauties at the beach, and discovered that all ladies were actively avoiding the sun in such ridiculous ways that we couldn't even enjoy any outdoor activities.
I couldn't understand it at the time, because the ladies in the USA were sunbathing to maintain a golden tan and I thought brown skin was incredibly sexy. I would try to convince them that foreigners liked brown skin, but unless they were a prostitute spending all their time with foreigners (thus already ostracized), they wouldn't be able to overcome the social stigma.
