House Built by Amateur Geologist has Fossils and Rocks from All 50 States

in #life6 years ago (edited)

This house in Southcentral Kentucky was built by an eclectic WWII Veteran in 1968. He collected fossils, rocks, and minerals from all 50 states and around the world. He included them all into the outside mosaic, mantle, fireplace, and outbuildings.

Most of the fossils are crinoids from the local area. However, some sections include locally-collected meteorites and even a small Moon specimen.

The wood was hewn from old-growth cherry trees still standing in the county. Eventually timber harvesting and processing became major local industry, but some large trees still stand on the property.

The living room and deck overlook a golf course on a rough Karst and sinkhole terrain.

I would be a horrible guest....
All social skills are absent when the amount of possible distractions is this high :P

I think the house was built for someone like you to visit and enjoy. Seems to me the host would delight in your distraction.

There is a lot to take in!

Nice photos! Fascinating the way he incorporated different rocks from his environment into the structure of the house. Sad though, about the old-growth cherry trees--they withstood time and the elements, but not the architectural aestheticism of one WWII vet.

Man, there are so many cool rocks I could never find them all, much less photograph them. I would like to document what is still known as factual.

Actually indoors, all the timbers, rafters, cabinets, paneling, anything wooden that shows--is still original cherry from lumber hewn locally.
