Thinking saves us time, money, even occasion life itself. Our life span is longer, travel is swifter and easier, and our homes are brighter and more comfortable because of thinking that outstanding inventors and scientists have done.
Thinking has value, moreover, for its own sake. Just thinking through a problem gives one feelings of pleasure and achievement. Such pleasures, plus the challenge of competition, explain in part the appeal of intellectual games and puzzles, like chess, bridge, crossword puzzles, and quizzes of all sorts. Aristotle, indeed, defining man as the rational animal, believed that what made us human was our ability to think. While the modern scientist does not accept the implication that animals do not think, he does agree that none of them can think in as complex and abstract a manner as modern man at his best. Through our ability to think, we archive our highest dignity.
