What you describe here is quite true. I was away for six formative years and pretty much missed out on the North American teen culture. However, what I missed in that experience, I gained in education. Overall I am happy I had the experience I did. Seeing first hand how another culture lives cannot be learned from a text book and helps you relate to a broader segment of the population of the world.
