Out of The Rigid Zone
The school was improving physically and implicitly with time going through. It purpose also starts to alter to be much more than words and books to educate and explicit student, it begins to consider the student to encourage them to attend and love being there. The documentary “School - the Story of American Public Education” shows in details how the classroom environment starts to differ and develop its contents to be more interesting for kids to attend, and it's a way to convince students that learning is more important than working in a dangerous place like factories.
Students at the period of the 19s would prefer to go and work in the factories instead of attending school. By looking at the documentary, families only concern back then was providing enough money to stay in their homes and feed themselves with whatever left in their pocket. Then the schools programs start to improve, and instead of staying attached to the seats they begin to involve activities in student lives to keep them enthusiastic during school days. Also, some subjects were being practice with an actual tools to develop their understanding of the materials. That bring us to the “Philosophy of Education” where it talked about in eighth chapter of the book “Teachers, Schools and Society” that aim for the purpose of education. It reshapes our mind to think that learning does not only deal with words and books to fill in students brains, but it’s also provided the children with tools to practice the subject with their hand and to see it with their eyes.
Children need to use their senses to shape their understanding to a particular material. This documentary gives an important element to consider while teaching a specific subject in school, which is using visual experiment for students to see and try using their hand and taste the flavor of learning. While looking at the video, a teacher could see what students needs, expect and hope from a school to do, so that they could adopt these ideas to improve classroom environment.
