The Concept

"There is no use of crying over a spilt milk" means to be upset on something that has already taken place and cannot be changed is worthless or getting upset on things that are certain and unchangeable are of no point. To remain worried about something that has become the part of the past is time wasting. We all know the rule of universe that defines past in a way that something which is gone and cannot be reached/returned again. For example, if a milk is spilled, it is wasted and cannot be recovered so to mourn on the same is illogical. Therefore, it is advised to leave what has gone and prepare yourself for something that is yet to come.

It's Origin

The exact of this origin is unknown by as per the information avaibale this phrase was firstly use in a book known as Banking Under Difficulties from 1888 which tells the story of a man who was robbed. Despite his predicament, he responded: “It was no use, however, crying over spilt milk.”. Although, the man was in a difficult situation, but he realized that there really wasn't much he could do about it at that time other than moving forward so used the phrase accordingly.

There is a second thought about its origin, as per which this common saying goes back even further. It's believed that James Howell, a historian and writer, used the phrase in one of his literary works in 1659, called Paramoigraphy (Proverbs). The phrase is read as "No weeping for shed milk."

If this is true than this means that this idiom is at least over 350 years old.

Some More Lines..

In life, we always have two options, its either one way or the other. Its can be yes or a no. We can also choose between waiting and regretting the entire life on the things that are already passed or moving on with high hopes and optimistic minds. In order to be successful and to achieve a peace of mind, one should not worry upon the things that have happened already as it was their faith and it had been written before the creation of this world and was suppose to happen which obviously cannot be changed. All we can do is to;

Don't cry over the spilt milk, clean it up and move on as we still have living to do.

There is always another key to a door so one should not lose the opportunities. It's always hard looking back. We should always constantly look forward. It's better to look for the new cow instead of crying over a spilt milk.

There is an awesome saying that covers this phrase with the flavor of optimism by W.C. Fields:

Never cry over spilt milk, because it may have been poisoned. W. C. Fields
