600000 statues in remembrance of all the soldiers that were killed in World War I
A silencing beauty
This temporary monumental artwork is situated in a parc in Ypres, Belgium. Right where the front of World War I was situated between 1914 and 1918...
Although this tragic event is now a hundred years old, we should never forget the atrocity of this tragic event that killed 600000 people on Belgian soil.
Therefore an equal amount of statues were made by school children and family members of the killed soldiers and placed next to each other to show the immense scale of this loss of life.
I am not a real art connaisseur but this really grabbed me by the throat. It makes every piece of prosperity and freedom we have now, not so evident...
We will never forget!
Sincerely,
Pele23
Well, I don't mean to be a cynic but waging wars is inherently tied to the human existence. There has literally never been a period in the history of mankind that was devoid of wars. Even now, in the 21st century we still wage wars. There will definitely be another World War. That I am certain of. The only thing that I don't know is when it might take place.
Cool art exhibit though. Kind of reminds me of the terracotta army.
Correct, but still we should never forget
WW1 was tragic on such a devastating scale. It’s very important to bring awareness. Not enough young people know the horrors of the Great War. Monuments like this are important.
