Do you drink Energy Drinks? Do you know the risks! How should talk about this with kids?

Energy Drinks - What are they?

A drink that resembles a sparkling juice and that contains a lot of sugar, caffeine, guarana, and taurine.

It is important to know the difference between sports drinks and energy drinks!

The so-called sports drinks such as Powerade or Gatorade do not contain stimulants!

The stimulants in energy drinks:

Caffeine - in large doses (1-2-3 x the dose found in a coffee depending on size and brand)

Guarana - an Amazonian forest plant (a Guarana bean equals about 2x the stimulation of a coffee bean)

Taurine - an amino acid also found in other foods, but in very large quantities in energy drinks

And other ingredients depending on the brand!

Risks of intoxication:

Increases heart rate, anxiety, sweaty hands, cardiac arrhythmia, increased evacuation (also stimulates this), insomnia, and irritability.

Effects for children and young adults - even more risks!

The elimination system (kidneys, liver) is too slow and therefore, the effects are more intense. In fact, Health Canada recommends that youth 14 years of age and under not exceed 85 mg of caffeine in 24 hours (1 coffee is already above that!). The heart of a child is already beating faster so there is more risk of having heart problems.

Talk to your children about the risks of these drinks especially in connection with physical activity! Simple addition, if the heart beats faster because of the cardio it will have a hard time if the person adds the stimulation of an energy drink!

Offer alternatives to your kids - other ways to get a boost like chocolate milk after exercise, a real fruit smoothie, sleeping more at night instead of playing video games! And the option of decaffeinated drinks, for example if they want to take a French vanilla coffee at Timmies!

Energy drinks are also more risky in some cases:

More serious effects on those taking stimulants (ADHD medications)
More serious effects for athletes who consume highly caffeinated drinks regularly (according to some studies, regular exposure to large amounts of caffeine inhibits the dilation of blood vessels which is necessary for the body to perform well during physical activity )

And withdrawal! Ah yes, there can be intense withdrawal symptoms if a person consumes energy drinks regularly!

When we are talking about energy drinks, it can be seen like alcohol:

Moderation is a better choice especially if you want a healthy heart!

Hello bro/sis, @parlonsdrogues, firstly, i am telling thanks for the post of you, If there is number of good nutrition foods , but the children are very interesting in having cool drinks, energy drinks and sports drinks but they d't known of that dangerous toxins. They only expecting the taste. from begining of at early stage of the children, parents should be a role model by avoiding that type of drinks. instead of having artificially colored drinks we can prefer some natural health drinks at home. thanks again for making awareness. followed and upvoted.

Thank you and you are absolutely right! Awareness should start in the home and be done by the parents. Yet, sometimes the parents aren't even aware themselves that what their kids are drinking is bad for their health! There isn't enough information circulating in the schools about making healthy choices! It's important that kids get information so that we may have a healthier society! Thanks for following me!!
