Rule #9

Do Not Rely On People

This is not to mean that you should neglect team work. Cultivate the habit of making your own decisions and taking actions when necessary.

The truth is, we really are all we’ve got in life. Everyone is striving to succeed and some may go to extent of stealing your ideas. People who depend on others to make their decisions are also those who always make up excuses why they should and should not do things.

You will position yourself rightly for success when you start to see it as something only you can control. It is true that you have family and friends but, in the end, it is your life, and the success of it will rest solely on the efforts you make. You may receive tangible help from people in your pursuit of success, but the main point is, whatever poor decisions you make will determine whether you will succeed or not.

Rule #10

Make Yourself “Mentorable”

Many people feel they already know everything and as such getting a mentor is unnecessary. You must understand that your having one may just be what determines exactly how quickly you reach the top.

A mentor is someone who teaches or advises a less experienced person on, possibly, a career path. It is never too late or too early to find a mentor.

The easiest way for you to choose a mentor is by asking a few questions such as: Which areas do you want to succeed?
Who has something to teach you?
A mentor has been able to make past some of the challenges you might encounter. They have succeeded despite the roadblocks and mistakes. Experience has helped shape them and their careers. Getting a mentor helps you to be ahead of others. You can be mentored physically or through great articles and books written by people you consider to be worth emulating in your field.

Open your heart and learn how they overcame challenges and difficult times. Just how were they able to keep pushing towards success, even when all they wanted was just give up already? If opportune to have a physical mentor, always be respectful and grateful to them.

Having a mentor increases your chances of getting the necessary assistance you need to succeed.
