When cars went remote, we all were pleased with the convenience in not having to try finding the keyhole when the lighting is bad. Next they upgraded it so that you could not only unlock the door but you could remotely start your vehicle. This was even better especially for people living in colder climates, they could start the car to warm it up and not have to go outside.

All these conveniences are now being used by car thieves to steal your vehicle without needing the keys. The car fob's signal can be intercepted and recorded by a device which is readily available. The device can receive as well as transmit on a wide spectrum of wavelengths. The fob can be activated by the device even though a button was not pressed. The fob will transmit it's code which is captured and recorded by the device. The code signal can be use to access the car.

Car manufacturers have strengthened the security for their fobs. One upgraded security technique is called rolling code. Unfortunately soon after a new security is created, hackers will develop a way to defeat or get around the new security.

One suggested way to cheaply block the hacker's signal is by storing the fob in a metal container. The metal will block the signal from reaching the fob. For mobile protection, it has been suggested to wrap the fob in metal foil.
