BOOK OF ENOCH and THE DEAD SCROLLS.
In response to a question asked in my previous posting about the authenticity of the Book of Enoch, as Scripture, I decided to do a bit of research. I do not propose to go into depth with this posting as the subject is lengthy and complex, but interesting.
the word "Scripture"is from the Latin root word, meaning "writing"and is also defied in various dictionaries as "Sacred writings or books of a religious nature. I will endeavor to look at the Book of Enoch objectively and discuss the contents of the three segments of the book of Enoch. I however can say that it is a book containing writing of religious or sacred contents.
.
The Dead Sea Scolls, also called the Qumram Cace Scrolls are ancient Jewish religious manuscripts written in Hebrew with more than one manuscript, in the area of the Dead Sea. found in the Qumram Caves . and believed to be the fragments of larger manuscripts, and over the years damaged by climatic conditions and or the handling by humans.
A small number of well preerved and also allmost intact survivied, epeciaslly offrom the Qumra Caves, situated where the Jewish settlement Khirbet Qumram in the Judean Desert in Westbank. The Jews resided here during the Hellinistic Period in history.
Discovery of the manuscripts, from 1946-1956, the first discovered by Bedoin Shepherdm Muhammed al Dhib with his to cousins, Jumçh Muhammed and Khal, Musa 1946-1947.
Scholars and scientists date t to be at least 3 centuries BC to the first Century AD. Bronze coins Of Julius Hyraus (135 -140 ) to the first Jewish Roman War 66-73 BC, supporting the radio carbon dating.
The first scroll was identified as the Scroll of Isaiah, then Habbakuk, and the Rule of Community. Furhter scrolls were discovered from 1951-1952, containing the Letter of Jeremiah, and a Greek copy of the Book of Enoch.(Another more complete copy of the Book of Enoch was later found, written in Aramaic)
I will look into more detail as i continue.
The Book of Enoch i decribed a the great writings of Enoch great grandfather of Noah. (Also mentioned in the Watchers dated 300 BC).
There are three books.
Books called "First Book of Enoch, the second Book of Enoch. I must add that I found that not all Christian and Jewish religious groups acknowledge
it as part of the Old Testament or even religious!.
The Third Book of Enoch or 3 Enoch seems to b unrelated to Book one and Book two.
In Book two (dating from 14-18 AD is also known as the Book of the secrets of Enoch, describing multiple heavens, and of battles between angels and demons! It is believed that this account influenced Paul's account of when he was taken into the third heaven refer (2 Corinthians 12 verses 2-4)
Enoch in fact describes 10 Heavens! It is believed that this was and is unacceptable to Jewish and Christian groups
.First Heaven: Is situated above this firmament, and is from there that angel control our atmosphere, like snow, hail wind, and the water ]above.(Genesis 1 verses 6 to 7)
Second Heaven: Where there is Darkness and is a prison where rebel Angels are tortured,
Third Heaven: Paradise and the Garden of Eden, it is guarded by Angels (2 Corinthians 12:2). It also has Hell where bad men reside and are imprisoned.
Fourth Heaven: Place of movements of Sun and Moon , with detailed descriptions. On this Heaven there is a choir of Soldier Angels!
Fifth Heaven, Where the Gregori or soldiers of Satan reside, they look like human but are giants, they are in state of Limbo waiting for judgment Sixth Heaven: Angel who are scribes, and write of the souls of men, their deeds and their lives.
Seventh Heave: Where GabreHe desribes it il guide Enoch, and where he is allowed to meet the Lord face to face at a distance describing ad having a brilliant light, where legions of God's Angel live.
Eighth Heaven: This is just above the firmament, where Mutzaloh the changer of seasons and mover of constellations
live.
Tenth Heaven : Where God's throne resides and where He holds court.
in Chapters 1-22, Enoch now age 365 is taken through the heavens, in chapters 23-37 he is guided by Gabriel and he meets and speaks to God. Her he is anointed by Michael who is similar to the angels, where a group of angels refuse to acknowledge Enoch and ar imprisoned later to be pardoned. At this stage th Lord asks the Angel Vereviel to dictate 360 Books of knowledge to Enoch, and sacred secrets are told.
The third and last book in chapters 38-63 a list of doctrinal and ethical instructions are given from Enoch to his sons, (Testaments of the 12 Patriarchs), referring to the last section as "The Exaltation of Melchizedek", and it outlines the priestly succession of Enoch....his son Methuselah is asked to be the interim priest, and so was his son. Enoch tells the story of the miraculous birth of Melchizedek.
It must be mention that the antiquity of 2nd Enoch, was dated scientifically before or about the time of the Letter of Hebrews I have given as much information as I have found, but must mention that various scholars and researchers have different vies on the writings of Enoch.
Some of the authors of the New Testament were also familiar with certain contents of Enoch's books. 1 Enoch 1:9 is cited in Jude 1 14-15, also reference in Deuteronomy 33. It is an interesting manuscript, and worth reading and studying.
This research is really deep for my digestion!
Thanks for sharing, anyways!
Thanks for the article. So Enoch wasn’t a part of the Old Testament? I thought it was and got removed. It sounds like it’s worth a read. The part about multiple layers of heaven contradicts many views of the afterlife. Great work!
Yes I actually thought it was one of the books left out, but could find no substantial evidence for that theory. some scholars is positive others not. We know certain books were left out in about I think 276 AD by a council of bishops, but not sure of the names of the books. That is another topic I wile at sometime research!
i read this a few years back and made alot of links between Enoch's retelling of Samyaza and the rebel watchers who slept with human woman and the origins of the nephilim in Genesis 6. What is interesting is that Genesis refers to these offspring as the "heroes renowned" and considering the reference in the book of Enoch on these rebel angels being giants I couldn't help but think along the lines of hercules and titans, as told by greek mythology. I believe others have linked Goliath to be an offspring of these nephilim also. Personally i don't really care on the weight of its authority in judaism or christianity; but much like the last post you made on ancient aliens its always interesting seeing the descriptive similarities across cultures and different scripture
When it came to Genesis 6, I always made the connection to Hercules as well.
