Ancient false gods..

Throughout various scriptures the worship of false gods, are mentioned.

In ancient times the worship of various gods in all cultures were part of their religious life and practices.

It seems that in the various cultures gods with different names had the same purpose, but most ancient cultures worshiped in a similar way. Mostly it was in the form of offerings or sacrifices.
Some of the gods worshiped took the form of various images from human to animal, others were mythical figures.
We see that throughout the scriptures the Israelites became worshipers of false gods and then severely punished for this.
One prime example!

The wellknown worship of the golden calf, by the Israelites

I will just mention a few of the great number in more known areas.

Amun was the chief god of of Egypt.
(Jer. 46 v 25 .
Asherah , a Canaanite goddess consort to El, the main Canaanite god.
Wooden poles were carved in in her honor, and placed with objects pagan worship. Gideon destroyed one such a pole.

Ahtoreth, was the goddess of war and fertility. Consort of Baal, and associated with the evening star, worshiped as Ishter in Babylon and in Roman worship as Astarte or Aphrodite or Venus.

Baal is the most mentioned god, a Canaanite and Phoenician god, and in both the god of fertility and rain.
also called Beelzebub, and also called lord of the flies in Greek mythology.

Babylon's chief deity was Marduk, or Bel, meaning sun god. his sun Nebo isthe god of learning and writing. !

Dagon was the god of Babylon and Philista,

Amun's chief deity was Molech (1 Kings 11 v 4-5) The sacrifice of children formed part of the worship of Amon. Josua destroyed the areas where the sacrificial alters were.

Throughout the Old testament various false gods are mentioned, but when the first Christians went to the Greek and Roman cities, they found a number of deities, worshiped by the people.
Zeus in one of the Gods, he was the patron god of the city of Lystra, where a temple was built for him
HIs two sons Castor an Pollux were guardians of the sailors.
Certemus is a Greek goddess also called Diane by the Romans.

Ancient Egypt had more than 40 false gods, with statues, and drawings and etchings found .
Some of the gods had many names, like Marduk, god of fertility had 50 names.

Lastly the God Milcom associated with divination, and could be consulted to foretell the future. Sadly Solomon worshiped him among others at the end of his reign.
