MAKING THE BEST OUT OF A BAD SITUATION

Yes, it's true that life can sometimes be very stressful irrespective of who you are or where you find yourself. From the senior high school teenager to the old man/woman sitting in an elderly home. Every now and then, life plays tricks with us and this can be very frustrating. But then again, it wouldn't be called life if everything was so cozy and rosy. My good friend always says that it doesn't matter what you do, bad things will find a way of happening. I couldn't agree more to this accession, but ultimately, it is our reactions to this outcomes that determine our faith.

Today, while reading an article online, I came across this intriguing statement by former American sportscaster, Jack Buck:

Things turn out best for those who make the best of the way things turn out.

Every morning we wake up with a bunch of expectations, things we hope to achieve by the end of the day, the week, the month or even the year. But as you will agree with me, things don't always turn out the way we expect. Sometimes, they turn out better, in which case we can go ahead to celebrate our victories. Other times, things end up badly. In instances like that, we each have two options to choose from. I call them options because you do have a choice. You can either choose to give up and succumb to the situation or you can make the best out of it. At this point, you need to forget about what could have been or should have been and focus on what can still be. That is my way of saying: push aside the regret, stop feeling sorry for your self and rise to the occasion.

There's this interesting incident I always refer to anytime I speak on this subject matter. A while back, I believe about 5 years today, American actor, producer and narrator, Morgan Freeman, dozed off half way through an interview with Fox news. The news outlet had been interviewing he and co-star Michael Caine about their film 'Now You See Me'. The station noted on their website that perhaps Mr. Freeman slept off because he was tired from late night partying the previous day. In response, Mr. Freeman, 75 years at the time, said the following:

I wasn't actually sleeping. I'm a beta tester for Google Eyelids. I was merely updating my Facebook page.

Funny huh? this is an old man trying to make light of an unfortunate situation. Mr. Freeman chose to approach his predicament with a great sense of humor so people just laughed over it and life went on. As a scientist, I know that a lot of very useful discoveries today were merely bad situations turned good. I am sure a lot of us are familiar with the story behind the discovery of Penicillin. Sir Alexander Fleming, discovered what turned out to be the world's first antibiotic substance through the accidental growth of mould on his bacterial cultures. Like many of us, he could have decided to lament over it and discard those cultures. But instead, he dwelled on the positivity of this accident and ended up saving the world.

There are lots of bad situations that people managed to turn into good and desirable outcomes and you too can do the same, starting from today. So you are stuck in traffic, instead of complaining and lamenting over it, use that opportunity to read your emails, check your messages or even listen to news. Always remember, every misfortune has some form of silver lining in there, you just need to look closely. It's like they say, when life gives you lemons, make some lemonade out of it and have a good time.
