Steemit: Hope, Disappointment and Desperation
I joined Steemit a few hours after @dollarvigilante, directly because of his post on facebook on how he made $4000 in 15 minutes . I clicked on the link and was hooked! In the course of the following week I was captivated by the furore over his earnings for what some argued was debatable content. I also wrote a couple of blogs during the same period and earned cents, which was fine by me. (I'm South African and will soon be counting my billions due to the exchange rate anyway.)
On a serious note though, I think that the IDEA of earnings has drawn many to the platform simply because many of us just can't get by in our depressed society. Many of us are not coping, we are buried under piles of debt, living day to day, and not able to provide our children with even basic things we feel we should be able to supply. All of a sudden we click on a little link where people are EARNING, by doing what many of us do all the time anyway - expressing our opinions. JACKPOT!
Maybe not. We vote, we comment, we blog....and nothing. On top of that we see others doing the same and THEY really are hitting the jackpot. Truthfully, our disappointment is a symptom of the desperation experienced in our lives. We are living in an unsustainable manner, which is a breeding ground for misery, envy and bitterness.
There are no solutions to this. Luck and algorithms will play their part. Consistent work will help (as it does with everything), but is not a guarantor of success. Nothing is fair, "that is life" those of us with a philosophical bent will think. But here is what I have noticed - Steemit is arguably the largest community of like-minded people who do NOT want to accept life as we are currently experiencing it, and members are constantly exploring alternatives to the society that we find ourselves in.
I have HOPE.
