I gave up alcohol for Lent. I started out giving up sweets too, but that didn't last long : { One time I tried to give up coffee and my head fell off. I had a couple of cups and recovered and swore not to try quitting again any time soon. Alcohol is easier to skip for 6 weeks.
Those sins that we commit in our soul incomparably more terrible than eating meat during fasting. But however other priests may have other, more stringent requirements. But even if you are not allowed to Communion - do not worry too much, take it as God's warning about the need to be more careful in the future (and not just in food) :)
