The top 10 of the richest people of all time (Part 1)

in #life7 years ago

Hello my steemit friends. Today I want to present you the the 10 richest people of all time.

The Time Magazine has created a list of the ten richest people in history. The data for this are based on interviews with historians, but are often difficult to collect afterwards. How can we measure the wealth of a Roman Emperor with today's standards? Currencies and coins are a pretty modern invention.

Time magazine's editorial team has therefore dealt with a method by the Stanford professor, Ian Morris, who measures wealth in the form of the energy that has been consumed for the values. This sounds complicated, so an example:

The typical Hunter and Collector of the Stone Age captured approximately 10,000 kilocalories a day - today's average American consumes about 230,000 kilocalories a day. Everything is included: from the electricity for the lamps at home to the lunch to the gasoline for the car. In this way, historical personalities can be compared if we know their possessions exactly enough.

I want to present the list to you and tell some interesting things about the personalities.

Well let's start!

These are the ten richest people who have ever lived:

10. Gengis Khan (1162-1227)

The Mongol ruler, Gengis Khan, is considered one of the greatest commanders of history and made Mongolia the leading power and a giant empire in Asia. This country is what catapulted him into this list, because personally he had nearly no possesions.

On the contrary: among historians it is certain that the ruler was a very modest and generous person. He himself had no palace and his soldiers were forbidden under punishment, to plunder conquered territories. Instead, loot was sorted out by religious  and distributed to soldiers and their families.

9. Bill Gates (1955 - today)

Bill Gates is the ninth place in this list, the only still living person. His current assets are about 79 billion dollars, so he currently has around eight billion dollars ahead of Zara founder Amancio Ortega.

Gates got his wealth trough the Windows maker Microsoft. He is also considered modest: the Foundation for the Fight against Fatal Diseases, founded with his wife Melinda, has a foundational capacity of 33 billion dollars - mostly from Gates' own pocket.

8. Alan Rufus / Alan the Red (1040 - 1093)

Alan the Red is the nephew of William the Conqueror, who conquered nothing less than Great Britain in 1066. Alan accompanied his uncle, winning a wealth of around 11,000 pounds. This does not sound much, but it was then about seven percent of the UK's gross domestic product. Based on the current time, he thus had about 194 billion dollars.

 7. John Rockefeller (1839 - 1937)

John Rockefeller is a legend in the US. The oilmagnat entered the oil business in 1863 and controlled 90 percent of the US market 17 years later. His tax return of 1918 shows assets  of $ 1.5 billion. At the time, this was about two percent of the gross domestic product of the USA - and now worth 341 billion dollars.

 6. Andrew Carnegie (1835 - 1919)

So the Rockefeller is not even the richest American in history. This title goes to an Andrew Carnegie. The native Scotsman built the steel company U.S. Steel in the 19th century and sold it in 1901 for 480 million dollars to the large bank JP Morgan.

That was 2.1 percent of the US gross domestic product or, according to today's standards, 372 billion dollars.

That's for today, tomorrow I will post a second part where you can see the top 5 of the richest people!
