The Mid-Autumn Festival began around the time of the Xia and Shang Dynasties (2000-1600 BC). In the Zhou Dynasty the people celebrated by worshiping the Moon. In the Tang Dynasty the tradition was clearer and populist. In the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279 AD), people began sending moon cakes to colleagues and families as a symbol of family integrity. At night they walk out and visit the lakeside enjoying the moon.

In the Ming and Qing Dynasties, this tradition became more popular. There are some habits such as planting autumn trees, blaming lanterns and Dragon dances. The most important tradition that still exists today is with the family enjoying the silver moon while enjoying snacks and wine.

The Mid-Autumn Festival has a legend, the Legend of the Moon Goddess, Chang E. It is said that on the earth ten suns appeared. Houyi, the archer was sent to earth with his wife Chang E to shoot nine suns. He later became a hero who was hailed by the people. The Goddess descended and gave a long life medicine to the couple. Because of being too upheld, Hou Yi finally became arrogant. His wife became sad and then sipped all the drugs given to them. Finally his body slowly rose to the moon and became the Moon Goddess.

Another version says that Hou Yi's colleague Feng Meng is jealous of Hou Yi's achievements and wants to steal a long life drug. He wanted to steal it, but Chang E managed to prevent it and immediately swallowed the drug.
