RE: Ask the Car Guy @socky Nov 5

This is very nice of you.
I am actually dealing with a few issues on my girlfriend's car. Her vehicle overheats, the radiator fluid is always empty, but when I fill it and check for leaking, I can never see anything leaking.
Another issue is that the windshield wiper fluid won't come out despite being full. and the rear wiper never turns off.
The whole vehicle is a bit of a mess but I just want to keep it functioning over the next few months until she can afford something better.
Any advice?
Also, thanks for the follow it's much appreciated.

  1. If the radiator is loosing fluid and there is no leak, then I suspect that there is a head gasket leak and the engine is consuming the coolant in the combustion chamber. Does the car smoke? That could be the radiator fluid being burned. If the exhaust smells sweet, then that smell is the antifreeze. Replacing the head gasket is major work and the head needs to be checked to see if it has warped. If it is warped, then the head will need to be machined to get it flat. If you need to keep the car working until you get a better one, then get some sealer.

Her is a really good video explaining the sealer and how to get it to work.

  1. Windshield wiper fluid could be caused by a clogged sprayer. disconnect the rubber hose from the sprayer and hit the windshield wiper fluid button. If fluid comes out, then unclog the sprayer with a needle. If no fluid comes out, then it could be a fuse, the pump motor or the switch.

  2. The rear windshield wiper not shutting off sounds like a damaged or stuck switch.
