e-SIM

The SIM card of the phones (which assigns a voice and data transmission line to its owner) has been part of our lives for more than 25 years, first with the size of a credit card and subsequently smaller and smaller. The goal of the manufacturers is to occupy as little space as possible inside the device.

But there came a time when it was impossible to reduce it further, not only because it is difficult to handle a nanoSIM but because the card chip is already larger than the plastic that surrounds it, so that manufacturers now bring a new generation of cards, called embedded SIM, e-SIM or eSIM, a chip that is soldered directly to the base plate of the device, with a size 90% smaller than the nanoSIM.
A card to control them all

The eSIM will serve to forget the different sizes of cards, having to resort to format changes when buying a new model, or even to trim the old SIM or use an adapter to fit a new phone and will not give reading error to the move as there will be no pins with which the chip on the card has to contact.

The advantages of using an eSIM are multiple. What the operator will facilitate when hiring a new line for a phone with eSIM will be an activation code with a PIN, a PUK and a QR code. When scanning the latter, the profile of the operator and the chosen tariff are transferred to the card; Yes, Wi-Fi connection is required to do so and install a QR code reader in the terminal.

The eSIM was presented in society almost four years ago, and now it is when it begins to popularize its use among the phones that are coming to market. Apple is once again the spearhead to popularize technology by including it in its newly announced iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max and iPhone XR models. But the eSIM will not be limited to mobiles, smartwatches have advanced in the use of this technology and it is assumed that the use of the eSIM will allow to connect several devices to the same mobile network without additional cost
