I must admit that I felt a little empathy with your post. I don't remember the age but I know that at Christmas, as a gift, my parents allowed me to buy a skateboard; after all, I had the whole year talking about it (I think the TV show Rocket Power had a big influence on that). Anyway, the fact is that I finally bought it and I can tell you that I almost didn't dare to use it on the street. I don't know what the hell happened, I don't know if it was for fear of hurting me or that my classmates didn't practice skateboarding, but I ended up using it inside the house as a kind of bed with wheels. I just lay on my back on her and I moved around the house until we moved and I left her in the old house.
I don't know what would have happened to my life if I dared to use it (I don't plan to predict it either), but I'm glad to know that you faced your fears and turned them into fuel to continue doing what you like.
