But how do you know yourself? You can get to know yourself somewhat by the comments made about you by your friends or relatives or by the various people you meet while walking around in society.

However, this is not the right way to know yourself. If you want to know yourself scientifically, take the Big Five test. Two separate research teams—Paul Costa and Robert McCray from the National Institutes of Health and Warren Norman and Lewis Goldberg from the University of Michigan and Oregon—developed the Big Five first in the 1970s.

Most people's personality traits, regardless of language and culture, can be broken down into five broad dimensions. These five dimensions were extracted by analyzing the data through a statistical method called factor analysis after asking hundreds of questions to thousands of people. It is important to note that the researchers did not find five dimensions of self-awareness but rather these five dimensions emerged from data analysis. The Big Five is now the most reliable scientific model for delineating personality types.

The Big Five Assessment measures five dimensions of your personality. They are:

  1. Openness - openness 2) Conscientiousness - conscientiousness 3) Extraversion - Extraversion 4) Agreeableness - Agreeableness 5) Neuroticism - Neuroticism. These are abbreviated as OCEAN.

  2. Adaptability or openness: It describes a person's tendency to think in abstract and complex ways. High scorers tend to be creative, adventurous and intelligent. They like and enjoy playing with ideas and having novel experiences.

Low scorers tend to be realistic, believe in societal norms, and focus on intuition. They avoid the unknown and follow the traditional or the conventional.

Open-mindedness is strongly related to a person's interest in art and culture. Open-minded individuals tend to enjoy the arts and seek out varied and complex ways to express themselves.

People who score low in openness are often not interested in the arts and prefer to focus on practical or practical matters.

High scorers in openness are original thinkers, creative, curious but complex-minded; Low scorers tend to believe in conventional lifestyles, narrow interests, uncreative.

  1. Conscientiousness refers to a person's ability to exercise self-discipline and control to reach their goals. High scorers are organized and determined, and are able to sacrifice immediate gains for long-term goals.

Low scorers are impulsive and easily distracted. The concept of implicit conscience centers on the decision-making dilemma: Shall I do what I think is best now? Or instead do something that is less attractive now but more profitable in the future? Some people are more likely to choose instant receipt. This means that their consciousness is low. But those with high intrinsic motivation are more likely to work tenaciously to achieve goals without considering immediate gains.

High scorers on conscientiousness are reliable, well-organized, self-disciplined, and cautious;

Low scorers tend to be disorganized, unreliable, neglectful of duty.

  1. Extraversion: Extraversion describes a person's tendency to receive stimuli from the outside world or to attract the attention of other people. Extroverts actively engage with others to gain friendship, admiration, power, status, excitement, and romance. On the other hand, introverts conserve their energy and don't work hard to earn these social rewards of friendship-admiration-power-status-thrill. Extraversion appears to be related to the emotional satisfaction a person derives from achieving a goal.

Although everyone wants to experience success in life, extroverts are especially thrilled by success or victory. Especially excited when they can get the attention of others. Getting a higher position or promotion, finding a new romance or winning an award can all bring joy to an extrovert.
